Solid beer and a good selection. If that's all you really care about than this is a great 'off the main path' place to stop by.
Our problem was specifically with the staff member who was there and it threw the whole visit off. We arrived a little after noon, were the only people there, and quickly approached the bar. Immediately we got an odd vibe, as we were greeted with a sort of suspicious glare. We ordered a beer and immediately were asked for ID. Not a big deal, even in my 40s I don't mind showing ID as I understand there's some pretty severe consequences for not doing so. But the person at the bar must have stared at my ID (42) and my partners ID (33) for a solid 5 minutes each. Every few moments they'd look back up at us and kind of 'snarl' as if to imply there was something suspicous going on. When we did get our drinks it was almost with a muted sigh, and basically nothing else.
We took a seat and drank our beers without any intteruptions, and made the call not to order any more. When I approached the bar to close out my tab the staff member stood directly next to me and watched me unblinkingly as I filled out the receipt. It takes an insane situation for me not to tip at least a dollar a pour, and this would have been no different, but I've never in my life had someone watch me fill out a receipt in such an oddly threatening way.
The whole thing was just....off. I understand we're 'out of towners' but we showed up on off hours and bothered absolutely no one. Not sure what was going on, but definately...
Read moreI really enjoy hanging out at Hondo's Beer pub - cozy situation - great to hook with the regulars - pool table - clean - updated - and Ozzy's Boneyard for sound...đ
Hondo's is a nano-craft brewery. Beer is an organic substance - and every batch is its own beast. Bottom line is that I have had some great beers, some modest beers, and some "less than stellar beers" - which is why I always do a few tastes and a flight. Occasionally I even had a less than stellar Bodizathas and Vortex..
re 06/23/22 Ok - today was a bit challenging. Did enjoy the Cranberry cider - with just a bit of vinegary characteristic but sharp and refreshing, the Raspberry Gose - lots of Raspberry (my fruit for the day!). And the basic Dog IPA - nice hop bite in the throat - but not a huge depth. Sad to say, the darks were tough to day - did not finish any from my flight - not sure what to say here....
03/4/22 - Enjoyed the Mocha Stout - clean, satisfying, no off tastes - very enjoyable. Likewise the Cranberry Cider and Raspberry Gose. Admittedly, this latest batch of Imperial Red and Haze were not especially thrilling
re RJ RJ is the owner - might be a bit gruff initially - but that wears off pretty fast. He gave me a great lesson in chemistry. I appreciate his explorations - with some very...
Read moreAs both a bartender and relatively picky beer enthusiast, I found Hondoâs Brew Pub when looking for a dog-friendly, indoor space to enjoy with my girlfriend. Upon entering, I even told her (also a bartender), âthis will either be some of the best or worse beer weâve ever had.â After a brief chat with RJ, the owner and phenomenal human who brews all of the exceptional beers Hondoâs has to offer, we got our drinks; the Dog Day IPA for me, and the Big Red Dog Red IPA for my girlfriend, Kayla. It should go without saying that those were two of the best beers weâve had. The Dog Day IPA is quite similar to Barley Brownâs Pallet Jack IPA, one of my top 5 favorite beers of all time, and the IRA was equally as delicious. My only regret is that we couldnât stay longer. If youâre in Astoria and questioning whether you should swing by Hondoâs, Iâd confidently say you absolutely should. Between the atmosphere, the ownerâs amazing attitude, humility, and passion for excellence, and the location, we will...
