I finally visited In-N-Out and ate one of their legendary burgers. After driving by the restaurant several times and seeing the long, long lines at the drive-thru, I didn't think I would be eating here anytime soon. Today, however, there were very few people. I checked their listed hours - it was 10:00 am and they weren't supposed to open until 10:30, but customers were already using the drive-thru and the dining room. I knew this was a rare chance, so I pulled over and went inside.
I ordered a Double-Double, "animal-style," with fries, a drink, and a chocolate shake. Yes, it was too much, but this was research, after all!
To begin with, the fries were a bit disappointing. They were rather doughy after the first bite, too starchy. There is an option to order the fries "well done" and that's my recommendation for the future.
The burger was tall - too tall. The ingredients were of good quality - the tomatoes and lettuce were fresh and colorful, the pickles were tart. But I took them out to make my burger more manageable. This left two patties and cheese - the "animal-style" meant both patties were "mustard fried."
Now, In-N-Out fans may be outraged... but the burger was not much different from burgers at McDonald's or Burger King. The legendary special sauce, too , simply seemed to be a variation on the kind of special sauce you get at Shake Shack, or with a BIg Mac, or with a Whopper. If the quality of the meat really was an improvement, I couldn't tell because the sauce overpowered such subtleties. I did notice the bun had a nice texture.
The chocolate shake was also nothing special. Again, the ingredients are supposed to make this item better than the usual fast food shakes. But I couldn't tell much of a difference. The flavor is a light chocolate, not very dark, not very rich. I wish it had been more chocolate-y.
This has been a rather mild review, with phrases like "nothing special" and "not much different." Here's what WAS different, and this is important. At one point, the crew working behind the counter broke out into laughter. Not mean laughter, either - not sarcastic, snorting laughter, not scoffing laughter - no, this was happy, cheerful laughter. They were having fun back there! It was really nice. That spoke volumes to me about this business. Happy people make good food. Heck, they make the best food. Keep that up, In-N-Out! Let your crew workers have fun, because that is what REALLY makes a difference between you and all the other fast...
Read moreWent at 10 and got two cheeseburgers and an animal fry both were supposed to be animal style with extra toasted buns, no tomatoes and one with extra grilled onions and pickles, the second burger with modifications got put in wrong and it ended up just being a plain cheeseburger, we didn’t notice until after we got our receipt in which we informed hazel who was working window immediately, not only did she have an attitude about it but her way of fixing it was to have them add grilled onions on top of the already unnecessary amount of uncooked onions they already added, when I asked her to have it remade correctly without the uncooked onions she had an attitude and came back a minute later with the correct burger just this one was pink in the middle, without asking if we wanted any sauce of anything she gave us the burger and immediately walked away, I get it’s frustrating working in the restaurant industry but the lack of professionalism and customer service is completely unacceptable, on-top of her terrible service and attitude our burger were cold not toasted at all and tasted really off. It’s really disappointing seeing this location fall so low considering this was such an amazing location weeks ago, it’s also extremely disappointing the kitchen staff is so unprofessional they would add a gross amount of onions to burger it’s just spiteful. The fries were also cold and hard which is really disappointing. I will never come back to this location and I recommend everyone else drives the extra 10 minutes to the north field or park meadows location it’s worth the extra drive to be treated like a person and get what...
Read moreI really wanted to like this place, as ainhad such a positive experience in California, however when I got my burgers, the bun was stale, and hard on the bottom, as if they were sitting out for a while, the presentation was messy as well with everything falling out, and not the usual customer service I was used to. It really hurts to have to write this about such a great company. Maybe I visited a not good location or overall state, but maybe I'll try visiting when there's more people, because the quality is higher, when More people are expecting their burgers. And the bun was cold too. It's as if they made the buns, and let them sit out. You know when you make a bagel and forget about it in the toaster, and when you come back, it's crispy , and not fluffy, and usually cold, and not fresh anymore. That texture and quality was exactly how the buns felt at this in amd out. I was SHOCKED when she handed me my burgers, I didn't want to take them, and asking them to redo mine, would seem like I would be making a scene. As always, if you want the original, you have to go to the origin: aka California. Sorry not sorry. I like fresh buns, and burgers that are...
