I want to shout out the staff at this particular location. Me and my group walked in and we were warmly greeted by the manager (I think, he dressed well and had glasses) and he told us the dumplings were made in house. Our eyes were bigger than our stomachs but we really wanted to give the place a shot, our server was worried we ordered two much (which we did, all the food couldn’t fit on the table but we were very systematic). Service was great. The internal decor is kinda weird to me, the message I received from the interior was that Asian things are trendy with the decorative clothes are hung on the walls. Just put up a painting or consult a feng shui master. The food was ok; the food was good quality but much of the flavor did not satiate our pallets - I’m sure the food tastes good to folks with a basic pallet. And we were full, so definitely better than most food options; but if you were to compare a dish here and a similar dish elsewhere, I wouldn’t be so sure. But the highlight is certainly the staff, specifically the manager gentleman and our server. Our server was very kind and considerate, we could tell she was worried we wouldn’t finish/eat our foods (we had half of two dishes left). And the manager was awesome, he’s got integrity and professionalism. We finished our food and we got to the car, leaving for bubble tea elsewhere. Then the manager comes out with my card that I forgot, he cracked a joke about charging extra but I didn’t exactly hear him, I was just grateful. Granted, I would’ve totally returned that night as soon as I realize at the bubble tea shop. He totally didn’t have to walk out personally to hand it back but he did and he saved me some time just by the simple act of being a good person. I’ll mosdef be back, I like to support good people. Anyway, you’d be hard pressed to find convenient dim sum and dumplings anywhere else...
Read moreTo say I was pleasantly surprised would be an understatement. Came out here for a work trip and wanted some good dumplings and came across Nana’s. We have many dumpling and dim sum spots in San Diego, but this was by far the best experience I’ve had.
Food: Szechuan Chicken, Chili Wontons, Spicy Chicken Soup Dumplings, and Sesame Buns Cost: ~$50 for everything
I’ll start by saying that a lot of places don’t do Szechuan chicken justice. Usually it’s missing that spice and tingle that one expects with anything Szechuan. Nana’s does it right, and the level of flavor in this dish alone was impressive and it set the mood for the rest of the dishes.
The chili wontons were exceptional as well (make sure to give them a good mix) and had layers of flavor. Portion sizes weren’t bad for the price either. I didn’t really need to add anything, which was nice.
Spicy chicken soup dumplings/buns were quite surprising! It was a new dish on the menu and any time I see that, I figure I should try it. The dumpling wrappers were delicate and contained quite a lot of the soup broth, so some delicate handling is necessary. As with the previous dishes, the flavors were just on point. The filling was tasty, and the soup rounded it all out with a pleasant level of spice.
Lastly, the sesame buns. I love black sesame, and this had everything black sesame in it from the bun itself to the filling. It came out steaming and even 20 minutes later when I had to have another, they were still warm and just as delicious.
If I had more time here, I’d definitely come back again. With that said, please open a location...
Read moreI'm going to share my complete honest review of the soft opening of the Nana's Dumpling restaurant. We ordered a few things that were on the menu, but to be honest, it seems like most of the stuff that's on the menu, you're paying full price meal prices for appetizer sizes. The only food items that were worth it on the menu was the barbecue pork dumplings and the soup dumplings. Including with the soft-opening as well, we were trying to enjoy our meal, but we had the waiters and waitresses in our faces every five minutes. We get hardly enjoy our food and peace and on top of that, we had someone talking to us every 5 minutes to make sure that we were okay.
I understand that the service is good to check up on you, but not every 4 minutes.
When you first walk in, you'll have a grand entrance of a Chinese type style restaurant but I believe in my opinion, your paying for the price of the atmosphere and not the food because the food is a bit overpriced. I know at least two other dumpling restaurants that are a bit lower priced and also better tasting as well!
Overall, its a good place to visit once just for the atmosphere, but other than that, that's about it. Unless you want to pay full size meal prices for Appetizer size meals then go for it!
((This place is basically an Instagram trap)) ..Looks good and flashy but overall the food and dumplings are...
