The attendant was on the phone when I arrived at this walk up shop on the edge of Republic Square Park downtown. I waited for 3 to 5 min while he finished his conversation.
I ordered two Rose n Shine breakfast sandwiches $8. You can choose the bagel with egg, type of protein and cheese among other add-ons. I chose the Jalapeno Cheese bagel with bacon and pepper jack cheese. The other was a Parmesan bagel with ham and swiss. I also ordered a hash brown $2.
When I got home and opened the hash brown, it was very thin and smaller than McDonald's but tasty. Btw I haven't been to McD in quite awhile but looked up their prices. (OMG hash browns go for $1 to $2.99 or higher in some states.)
The sandwich was ok. Bagels in Texas just aren't the same as in the Northeast. Caution: If you are not a fan of garlic (Not a fan especially as a surprise), this is in the spread that they put on the sandwich. I did know that they put a garlic mayonnaise on the sandwich. I was so hungry that I ate the Jalapeno Cheese sandwich but I went to return the other one.
The attendant said he couldn't take the sandwich back. I asked him to make me another one then. He said throw it in the trash but I opted to give it to a table of homeless people instead.
He made me the sandwich but said I should have read the menu (which only says spread) and that he only had a plain bagel left which was highly unlikely.
Food was decent, service was sketchy and make sure to ask what the sauces consist of...
Read moreOverall love this spot!!! I grew up eating New York/Boston/Montreal bagels. Rosens have long been top game in Austin, I’ve been getting them since they started doing pop ups around town in breweries many years ago now. Highly recommend their bagels for anyone who is also a bagel snob like me.
Ok harsh bagel critic coming through, primary feedback:
Everything bagel is too heavily coated, especially with poppy seeds, which results in a bitter flavor when the seeds are toasted. I like a heavily coated bagel in theory but it can detract from the flavor in practice, also it makes the first texture you experience when biting into it the layer of “stuff” vs. the chew and crust of the bagel. There is a fine line here I think, as with too little coating it wouldn’t really be an everything...
Read moreRosen's Bagel is a wonderful spot to get some brunch and share a yummy bagel sandwich with some friends. My friend and I were visiting Austin coming from a National convention and wanted to try out a bagel shop that was local. The service was great and they greeted us with a smile as there was a moderate line to get the food (assuming it's pretty popular). I paid for both of our bagels and it came out to $30 ($15 a bagel) which was pretty pricey in my opinion, but I could somewhat see why as the flavors were super yummy. I got the Rose N'shine and added Turkey as they made avocado my protein. The location isn't the best if you're planning to eat there as it was extremely hot and the picnic tables were burning. Water is free luckily and we...
