I’m usually a New York style pizza kinda girl. I used to love Chicago style pizza growing up; Uno was my favorite spot on the West Coast. I can’t say that I’ve ever personally had a Detroit style pizza so today was a first for me. Via 313 East in Austin is where we headed today. They are situated in old downtown Sixth street and have a nice outdoor area with lots of bench seating. Their parking is a lil cramped, but for a downtown spot to HAVE parking at all is a plus. Really nice staff too! As soon as you walk in you are greeted by whatever wait staff happens to be available at that moment. As you look around you get a kind of a warehouse vibe. Everybody’s really casual. There is a bar off to the side; not sure if there is more or larger party seating in the back? I didn’t really explore but I DID use the facilities which are very clean. And, they do also have additional waiting bench in the bar/bathroom vicinity. They have a wide variety of pies. And they have a limited number of appetizers and salads too. today we tried the goat cheese and artichoke dip as our app. It was served with kind of a French roll crouton which is very thinly sliced and toasted. Super good! The goat cheese is slightly salty and has a very country-milky taste but mild at the same time. I grew up eating goat cheese and am lactose intolerant but since this is cultured it’s very nice on the tummy as it’s a very mild cheese and goats milk is better for us than cow milk. There’s lots of marinara which I really like. It really melds with the goat cheese and is spiced beautifully. The addition of basil juliennes only add to the sauce’s delicious bite. The artichokes are fresh and very meaty; it all comes together w the crunch of the croutons, I honestly ate too much at that point!! But with the pizza still to come; we had to stay strong!!! The daughter tried their square pepperoni pizza, which upon arrival I thought I was going to hafta “politely speak with somebody about missing pepperoni“ When in fact the pepperoni was comfortably situated underneath all the melty cheese. L O L They put a nice double row of marinara sauce on top of their pies to make it look not like your conventional pepperoni pie. Very aesthetically pleasing. Again, the sauce is nicely spiced; very tomatoey, with a good amount of oregano and basil. Their mozzarella is very fresh and very mild but still super flavorful (I LOVE a good Mozzarella!!), they use the large pepperonis on the inside which is interesting. My pie was the Omnivore. It’s a supreme type pizza w veggies included and normally has pepperoni and sausage which I took off because I don’t like sausage on my pizza and added pepperoncinis. It was excellent! They use the small pepperonis on the outside of This pie which are allowed to crisp up - I love that!! You can’t get those large pepperonis crisp like that. The pepperoncinis were very salty sweet, imparting a great flavor to the veggies and cheese. I also loved the crispy crunchy baked cheese around the edges of the pie. Super delicious!! I don’t know if this is the signature of a Detroit style pizza but it was really worked; reminiscent of cheesy bread. Also Their crust is also super light and airy/bubbly which I really like! You get all of your textures workin. An excellent pie I gotta say!!! Via 313 pizza did an excellent job all around! I highly suggest you check them out next time you are...
Read moreI cannot tell you how disappointed and bewildered I am with the “ service”we recieved this evening. I don’t know that I have ever been treated so poorly in a restaurant. We (5 people) were seated and ordered at 6:30, we ordered a few salads, beer and a few pizzas. Nothing complicated. The restaurant was not slow but not busy either. The sever tells us it’ll be 25 minutes get the pizza. Ok great- doesn’t sound unusual. Salads arrive in to go boxes, ok no big deal. 45 minutes later server comes, and says the kitchen is crazy & the order is lost. Again, not a big deal -accidents happen. He says he can put it back in as a rush order or we can just leave… (this was a little confusing and we should have left, but it’s 7:45ish at this point and we’re hungry so another 20 minutes is fine) 10-15minutes later a manager-type person arrives and again says the order is still lost. Lost, how? & how can you loose half an order twice? So the order goes in again because at this point we’re here and it’ll be more than 30 minutes to go somewhere else. (Again, we should have left but we’re visiting Austin and deliriously hungry at this point so we stick it out) So it’s another 40 plus minutes and nothing. And that’s the weirdest thing -other than the beer guy bringing a round no one really apologizes. Meanwhile to go pizzas are going out the door right and left. Server comes back and he’s like “I really don’t even know what to say.” ( still doesn’t really apologize & definitely wants us to just leave ) While some people around us were getting food a lot of people seemed frustrated. I think the worst part was no one really cared? I was starting to wonder if we were on a hidden camera. The situation was so ridiculous. I would attach a verified receipt but despite ordering 3 times they still don’t have our order. Finally - a pity pizza arrives at the table, it’s not our order and is cold and undercooked.
So - pro tip if you choose to visit this establishment & they say they lost your order & do you want to just leave? You say yes.
On a positive note we visited the following local establishments on our trip and had great service & food. Paperboy Hillside Farmacy El Alma Jester King ( fantastic pizza) Odd Wood brewing / KG Bbq Juan...

During my numerous visits to Via 313, a renowned pizza joint in Austin, I've consistently enjoyed their impeccable service and delightful dishes. However, on my most recent visit, a minor hiccup occurred – I received a pizza that was smaller than what I had ordered. This wasn't a major issue for me, and I was prepared to leave with what I got. But this is where Tyler, an extraordinary team member at Via 313, stepped in and showcased remarkable hospitality.
Without delving into specifics, Tyler's response to the situation was not just economically thoughtful but also demonstrated a level of care and attention that genuinely stood out. It's these small gestures that amplify the customer experience, and it was evident that the entire team at Via 313 shares this ethos. The cocktails, as always, were top-notch, but it was Tyler's extraordinary service that truly made the evening memorable.
What's more fascinating about Tyler is his background. Conversing with him, I discovered that he is not only skilled at his job but also an intellectual powerhouse with a PhD in Anthropology. Engaging in a conversation with someone as knowledgeable and insightful as Tyler is a rarity, especially in casual dining settings. We delved into topics ranging war history to the current global affairs – discussions that were both stimulating and enlightening.
In conclusion, Via 313 goes beyond just serving great pizza; it offers a space where genuine connections are made, thanks in no small part to people like Tyler. His hospitality, coupled with his intellectual prowess, makes for an enriching experience. I highly recommend sitting at the bar for an engaging evening. Overall, my experience at Via 313 deserves a resounding five stars, and I am eagerly looking forward to...
