Carls Donuts & Bakery & Fat Guys Pizza — Restaurant in Avon

(Update 3yrs later--- This place is under new ownership. I have not been to get donuts since it switched hands.)

This gem is nestled just one entrance West of Speck's Pet Store. As you walk in, you're greeted with the smell of fresh pastries and gentle music playing from the ceiling. Watch out for the table with baked goodies as you navigate to place your order. Carrot cake, caramel brownies, and delightfully decorated cupcakes inundate the surface. If you manage to get by the table empty handed you're sure to have plenty of room to carry a dozen carefully crafted treats. I recommend the maple-bacon donut and the eclair. The sweet and salty of the maple-bacon is perfectly balanced. I would have eaten four or five of them, but I'm a hand model, so I watch my figure. The chocolate ice cream was great and approved by my 17yo daughter. One last thing I want to mention is the coffee. I had never had Hubbard & Cravens coffee until this morning. I had the bold coffee and it was absolutely delicious. It paired well with the tasty treats. I add a little cream to mine and it was smooth. Very tasty. I’ve had the donuts here several times and saw that they offer lunch so the family and I decided to give it a try…..plus I kept hearing all of these great things about their tenderloin! We went online, placed an order for curbside pickup, received the verification email that we had to respond to in order for them to process the order and hopped in the car to go pick it up. We get there and call only to find out that they don’t serve lunch on the weekends?? Say what???? I was told that they have the biscuits and gravy that was on our order, but nothing else. We asked for a refund and ended up eating somewhere else. I went back and looked on the site to verify that there is no statement on their site, or their menu to let people know this. And to top it off their online system let us order it and pay. This to me is VERY poor customer service and has completely soured our experience. Please do everyone a favor and put a statement up or something, we can’t be the only ones this has...

Growing up in New York, I always had a wide variety of donut options available. As a kid, finding the best donut place was sort of a favorite past time. I know a quality donut, and the quality found here surpasses some of my favorite childhood establishments. Don't let the plain sign, or back ally appearance cause you to drive past without giving it a try. I promise, they won't disappoint.

This time, I only tried the Bavarian Cream Long John, one of my favorites and one of the donuts I tend to be the most critical of. The custard had a smooth texture and the flavor and aroma was spot on. The fry cake surrounding the custard was soft, sweet, and had the slight crisp expected on the outside. The chocolate dip was just right with a slight shell over a smooth thin chocolaty layer on top of the fry cake.

I will be back for another Bavarian Cream, and if my first experience was this good, I can't wait to try some of the other options they have available.
