Coffee Call, located in the Village Square Shopping Center on College Drive, is a Baton Rouge treasure. It’s been a part of my life for as long as I can remember, and it truly feels like home every time I walk through the door. From its original location to its current spot across the shopping center, Coffee Call has remained a staple in our community, with its legacy even celebrated through a jazz processional when it relocated.
This is a must-visit for anyone passing through Baton Rouge or attending an LSU or Southern University game. Their specialty is beignets—pillowy squares of fried dough served hot and generously dusted (or smothered, if you prefer) with powdered sugar. They also offer beignet fingers, which are essentially the “chicken tenders” of the beignet world—easier to eat but just as indulgent. You can even customize your order to your liking: thick, thin, crispy, or light.
The staff at Coffee Call go above and beyond—they aren’t just employees; they’re family. Walking into Coffee Call feels like stepping into a warm kitchen where you’re greeted with kindness, familiarity, and the comforting smell of chicory coffee brewing. Whether it’s a cup of café au lait, hot chocolate, or just a perfectly brewed coffee, every sip reminds you of home and community.
While the beignets are the stars, the menu extends far beyond them. Their sandwiches, po’boys, and soups are incredible. And let me tell you about their gumbo—it’s a winter must-have. Packed with sausage and chicken, and served with crispy croutons, it’s the ultimate comfort food for “gumbo weather.”
The atmosphere is quintessential South Louisiana. Rustic wooden tables, wrought iron chairs, and a warm blue-and-white decor create the perfect backdrop for good food and good conversation. While New Orleans may have Café Du Monde, I’m unapologetically biased—Coffee Call is where my heart is, and it always will be.
So whether you’re a local or just passing through, stop by Coffee Call. Grab some beignets, sip on a warm drink, and experience the heart of Baton Rouge. You...
Read moreThis is one of my all-time favorite places. I look forward to stopping here when I am driving through BR. I love everything about this place. I have been coming here since I was in high school, when they were in the beautiful old shopping center before it was torn down for the hideous WalMart. They have done a decent job with the present location, trying to preserve most of the same look that they had at the old location, though I will always miss the wrap around french doors and windows. Everything here is excellent. Once my husband discovered their chicory coffee, he looks forward to it every time and even wants it at home as well. I am not a coffee drinker at all, but sometimes I do enjoy the cafe au lait and like to mix in a little of their hot chocolate with it. Both are so good, even better mixed! The beignets go without saying, though I go for the classic; it will only be the true beignet for me. They started the "fingers" several years ago but they don't achieve the "puff" and inside soft that you can only get in the classic size beignets.
The best part about Coffee Call is the people. The same people work here forever until they eventually retire. I enjoy seeing the same sweet faces every time I am here. They remember me too, even though I might come through here only 4 times per year. One time I was fortunate enough to come through when it was a gentleman's last day to work there because he was retiring. They were taking up a collection for him and I was honored to be able to be a part of that.
I have been through a lot of things in my life since I started going to Coffee Call, but it has always been here and the important things about it have never changed. It's people, coffee and beignets are always dependable which is more than I can say for other factors in life. For that, it is a great comfort to have the privilege to be able...

I moved to Baton Rouge in 2017. I have been to many other coffee shops in Baton Rouge looking for a place to study, but NONE stand up to the environment here!
Coming from a small community, I am very particular about the environments I'm in. I'm very big about safety and "True Southern Hospitality". After my first time arriving here, I have not left!
The staff, especially the night shift (only time I come), are so friendly and warm. They have great customer service skills, which is so hard to find these days. They go out there way to take care of their customers. Always cordial, hard working, and do great at tending to the customers needs, even when busy!
The crowd that comes in is very diverse. You will not only see a mixture of age groups from old to young, but a broad spectrum of other nationalities, races, and religions! There are MANY regulars, and in that this place is more like a huge family. Kids play with each other, families intermingle and help with keeping all the kids occupied and happy.
There is ample room for a group to come in and enjoy themselves, or even by yourself. There are groups that come in and hold their game nights here, study sessions, etc.
Monday thru Friday they serve breakfast from 6AM till 10AM, lunch from 11AM to 2pm, and of course their FAMOUS BEIGNETS ARE SERVED ALL DAY!
Cons:
If you're here in the evenings they only serve beignets, so if you want any real food you have to leave and get it somewhere else.
There aren't any outlets spread amongst the area, you can only find them on the corner posts on the island.
Other than that I have no complaints.
So if you're looking for a "homey" place to be. A place that still holds the "Southern Hospitality" ways that South Louisiana is known for, come to Coffee Call. You...
