I have been to quite a few Japanese restaurants in the area and after my visit to Koya, my top three rankings have changed. I like the authenticity and the simplicity of this eatery. As you walk in, you get a sense of a true Japanese sushi restaurant. It's also not only about the ambiance alone; the food is also great. The menu is well organized and innovative. There are original dishes I haven't seen elsewhere. One such dish was Tuna Don, that I loved. It is tuna served over a bed of sushi rice accompanied by eggs, special wasabi sauce and grated radish. I loved its presentation as well as its taste and good portion size. I usually get Edamame beans as a starter and did the same here. The difference was it had a generous amount of sea salt sprinkled over it which truly did justice to this otherwise bland dish. Bento box was also tasty and had great portions The tempura in it was well fried but not greasy or soggy. Most restaurants cannot get that right for some reason but Koya did a good job. I also loved the smokiness of the chicken teriyaki, which again is an element most restaurants fail to capture Great job again Koya! Sals in the bento box was well dressed and tasty. Salad is also overlooked in other places so this was a pleasant surprise for me at Koya! Unfortunately, after indulging myself with so much food, I had no room for dessert, which I am saving for my next visit! (Stay tuned for my update later!) The service staff was very attentive from the moment I set foot in the restaurant to when I walked out. Service was also fast. Another thing I noticed is even though the space is not large, we had two great waitresses looking after us - a party of three! This truly elevated the customer experience; something you do not see in most restaurants these days unfortunately. If you are into Japanese sushi and have not visited Koya yet, just swing by at some point. Your top three may also change after...
Read moreKoya has been on my list for a while, so when two of my very good foodie friends recommended we meet here for dinner, I was all in. They raved how good it was the last time they came here and were craving more. Now I really had to see for myself.
The restaurant is located right in the middle of downtown beaverton. It is located right across from Afuri and is nestled in the area of a lot of restaurants. This area has really blossomed with some good restaurants, and Koya can officially be added to the list of highly recommended eats.
Parking wasn't too bad. I was able to get free street parking, but there is a paid parking lot right by the restaurant just in case. I know this area can get pretty jammed during peak season, so plan accordingly.
The restaurant itself is fairly small. There are a few tables by some windows looking out to the square, a few larger tables that seat groups of 4, the sushi bar. I fortunately got there early and was able to grab a larger table for my friends and I.
Service here is excellent, but where Koya really shines is the quality of the food and the portion sizes. My friend ordered the Chicken Katsu bento and it was massive. They gave her a full size spicy tuna roll, a generous portion of tempura and a stack of chicken. Oh, it also came with miso soup too. It easily could feed 2 people. My chirashi bowl was delicious and had a good ratio of fish to rice. I would also highly recommend checking out the appetizers. We got the gyoza and deep fried squid. Both were excellent.
Overall the food here is tasty and generous. With all the shrinkflation going on out there Koya is one of the few establishments that gives an excellent value for your money. I would highly recommend you stop in here if your are looking for authentic japanese food on...
Read moreThis is probably one of the best sushi places I've been to in a really long time. I did takeout last week (ate in the 1st St Commons outdoor seating right outside their door) and I've been wanting to go back everyday since. I ordered the Chicken Katsu- there's a good portion of crispy chicken (not dry at all), the curry was super flavorful, full of veggies like carrots and zucchini, and came with a tasty salad with a zesty asian dressing, rice, and tasty miso soup. Instant favorite. I also got the PDX Roll and it was neat, fresh, great portion size, YUM. It's easy to order online via Beyond Menu, you get an email with estimated time, and when it's done (and they were quick), and everything is neatly packed to go, with the order ready and receipt to sign when you go pick up. The restaurant looks new, is clean, and observing COVID-19 protocols- employees are masked, and you are required to wear a mask when picking up. About the outdoor seating- it's covered, it's regularly sanitized, and tables are spaced apart with clear notice posted- not to move tables/chairs, so it feels like the best option we have right now during the cold winter months, to still safely support small,...
