I had the opportunity to have lunch at Fred's yesterday afternoon. It seems to be run like a mom and pop's restaurant run by a family which is fine. The restaurant itself is cramped and there was a funky smell we couldn't place. My daughter said it smelled like feet and I have to agree. The drink machines weren't working and the other drink options weren't great. Also, they have a menu on their website, but most of those items listed are not available in the restaurant. What you get is a daily menu that consists of mainly sandwiches and salad. Again fine. I ordered a salad and my husband ordered a club sandwich. Apparently they were tired of making salads because I could hear someone, possibly the manager yelling out "Another salad! I guess today's a salad day." Okay...anyway, I was pleasantly surprised with the presentation of the food, my salad looked really good and tasted great. My husband was happy with his sandwich also. As I was enjoying my food I happened to look at the plate and noticed some black discoloration on the edges of the plate that resembled mold. My husband tried to tell me that they were probably made that way, but I can't imagine any manufacturer looking at that and thinking...hmmm, that looks good enough to eat of of. I asked the waitress and she said they were recycled bamboo plates and they come that way. I can't for the life of me find an image of a bamboo plate with this type of "natural design". I believe it was mold on my plate, but I'll...
Read moreFrank's Backside Deli is a hidden gem that truly impresses atop Beech Mountain with its delightful menu and charming atmosphere. Our family has visited since the 1980's. The standout dishes include the BLT with Avocado, which is perfectly balanced and flavorful, and the Great Ole' Smokey sandwich, which is a must-try for its rich, smoky taste. Both sandwiches are best enjoyed on their sourdough bread, which adds a wonderful texture and flavor.
The deli's glassed-in dining room offers stunning views, including the rooftop, adding a unique charm to your meal. If you prefer dining al fresco, the outdoor seating area is equally appealing. Here, you can enjoy your food while taking in views of local wildlife, soothing fountains, and the beautiful surroundings.
Attached to Frank's Backside Deli is a gift shop and general merchandise store, offering a wide range of items at fair prices. It's a great spot to browse and find unique gifts or everyday essentials.
Overall, Frank's Backside Deli is a fantastic place to enjoy delicious food in a beautiful setting, with the added bonus of a well-stocked, reasonably priced gift shop. Highly recommended for both locals and...
Read moreSuper rude staff. I waited an hour and a half for eggs and a biscuit. The lady at the counter was extremely rude and completely forgot my order. After waiting an hour for an egg sandwich, I asked the counter for an estimate of when my order would be ready. I was told 5-10 minutes. As I was walking away from the counter, the lady at the front made a comment to her coworker and said “they’re used to McDonalds”, implying that we were unreasonable for waiting an hour for eggs and a biscuit. Afterwards, I waited an additional 25 minutes just to get my food. It took an hour and a half just for some eggs and a biscuit. Meanwhile, several other groups asked for refunds, left, or were frustrated and asking when their order would be ready. What irked me the most was the fact that we were sitting in front of the counter with the entire staff walking by and not a single person checked on us or gave an update on our order. My family lives on Beech Mountain and has been to Fred’s many times, but we will not be returning. Absolutely absurd...
