I had high hopes for this place being that I'm a Bellevue resident and tried in on three occasions.
Decor is cute and cups margaritas are served in feels like Mexico. One time I went, they had no clean cups and served in tiny water cups. I felt ripped off on the price!
The first time I went, I tried tacos and they were just ok. For $4.50, I would expect bigger portions and would, at minimum, expect a tastier taco. To compare, I had tacos in Texas and California recently that were double the size, way more tasty and $2-3/each. For the average white person in Kentucky, I guess these are ok. I mean, they love Agave and Rye here and that's just shameful!
The last time I went, I asked the guys in the kitchen (in Spanish) what the best dish they had was. I wanted to give Tulum another chance and really love this place. They suggested the carnitas nachos. This was a decent appetizer type meal to share with friends and have a margarita, but my gosh, for $17 it should have tasted better. Again, it wasn't bad, just ok.
The ordering system is a joke and don't expect to be waited on. It's confusing what the owner is going for here. The bartenders are nice and really trying. You have to work for your food and drinks, even if you're not drinking alcohol and you are expected to tip before even knowing what you are getting. Can we at least order from one place? People aren't trying to make transaction after transaction and it's backing up your bar. Perhapsa table ordering system with a QRC? Toast has this option and I know they use toast.
Overall, I would probably go a lot if the food was better despite the cost. I may go back as pregame to a real dinner and have a margarita and appetizer, but that's about it. I don't expect this business to do well in the long run and last very long. It's unfortunate for there is potential!
After reading the other reviews and the owner's response, it's disappointing that there isn't more humility to better the establishment and listen to feedback rather than being brash and...
Read moreThe Unexplained Process for those looking to try: Step inside, order food to the left, order beverages from the bar and find your own seat. Marketed as an authentic Mexican Kitchen Bar & Patio, yet is heavier on the bar atmosphere than anything else. Food is seemingly authentic in flavor despite the smaller sizes. Decor is a nice, inviting jungle vibe. You can see the history of the name also on display as the city it was named after is known for a Mayan afterlife festival, seen in the small statues of dancing skeletons and skeleton mariachi. Bathroom seems to celebrate cartels or narcs. Very loud music. Again, the food tastes nice. Nothing special and the quality v quantity doesn't seem to fit right with the pricing, even in the current inflation infected economy. Food does come out fairly quick, which is to be expected with the limited menu. Beverage options for those that don't consume alcohol is very limited: Coke, Sprite and water. Asking for a tip at time of order is a bit unnecessary as outside of food delivery, there is no service to tip for. Overall, it was nice-ish to try, but as a non-drinker, it's not worth a repeat visit. If you are looking for affordable quality authentic flavor that will leave you full, Dayton has Restaurante Domingo and Newport has Fiesta Cocina as well as...
Read moreWas expecting better after seeing so many 5 star reviews talking about how great the food is. I haven’t been to Tulum Mexico so maybe this is similar to the food that they cater to tourists there. Anyway all I can judge it on is my taste and opinions.
We ordered chips and queso to start. ($8) I always judge places like this on chips and queso. Food can be average at a place like this but if they have great chips and salsa/queso I will return. Unfortunately I was not very impressed 2/5 stars for the starter.
Burritos were pretty good, nothing special but they were fine. Just rice, queso, beans, and protein. In my opinion they need something to brighten the burritos up. Lettuce, fresh pico, some kind of fresh veg would help a lot. If I do ever come back for food might try the tacos. 3/5 stars for the burrito.
Don’t expect to be blown away by the food, it’s decent. A bit overpriced but that’s the world we live in now. They don’t have pricing on their online menu which is also annoying.
Good atmosphere and vibes, friendly employees also. Some good reggaeton playing inside which was cool. Drink menu looked interesting and we would probably return for drinks when...
