I really wanted to love this place - the atmosphere seemed great, the menu looked delicious, and the website hyped it up well.
Appetizers - tuna, coconut shrimp, spinach and crab dip. The tuna came out and seemed to be over cooked from what I would expect, but it had great flavor and everyone enjoyed it.
The coconut shrimp was crispy, and had good flavor, tasted like standard coconut shrimp you would expect to find at most places. Be warned though, if you are getting this for a table to share, it is 4 coconut shrimp.
The spinach and crab dip was disappointing. It lacked flavor. It was mostly spinach dip which a small mound of flakes of crab meat on top - I will not assume that it was canned crab meat, but it looked like the canned crab meat I have used for dips before. Unfortunately, when you mixed the crab into the spinach dip, there was no crab flavor and you couldn't really tell there was crab present at all.
Entrees - we had a big party, so I will review what I had, and what I tried of others. I had ordered the Paella, as had another person at the table. My paella was heavily seasoned to the point that it was the only flavor that came through. My portion was noticeably smaller than that of the other person at my table, and that of the person at a table nearby (it was upon seeing that order that I decided on the paella because it looked fabulous). There was obviously less rice and seafood in my paella than the other person in my party. Perhaps they were running out? Or they made both orders concurrently but didn't make enough so made due with what they had. At any rate, both the flavor and portion were disappointing.
My son got the pan roasted salmon and loved it. I had tried his salmon and thought it was really good - well cooked and flavorful. Would definitely try that again. The rice and beans it came with were good but also seemed to be underseasoned, but it was a good portion. The vegetables that it came with were squash/zucchini, and broccoli - these had absolutely no seasoning on them whatsoever and were mushy - steamed to death and left sadly on the plate.
My daughter had the grilled chicken sandwich, albeit she received it 10-15 minutes after everyone else was served - we were told her sandwich was given to another table. When it did arrive, it looked good but again this is another dish lacking flavor. The menu says it is "Rum N' Pepper marinaded chicken" however what I tasted of her food did not taste like chicken that was marinated. I had tried a decent size piece of the chicken alone as well as on the sandwich, and it tasted like plain grilled chicken with cheese on top and certainly not "Rum N' Pepper marinaded".
The consensus among our group of 15 was that the food and service was mostly just okay with some of it being a disappointment. We may give this place another shot, but given other options, it is not on our list of places that we have to return to when we visit again so we may not actually...
Read morePopular Caribbean themed beach restaurant in a modern two story beach area building in Bethany Beach, Delaware. Mango's is a big place with views of the Atlantic Ocean and the Bethany Beach boardwalk and shops from certain sections of the restaurant located at 97 Garfield Parkway, one block off the very nice boardwalk across from the outdoor theater area
Mango's has a huge festive Caribbean beach party almost "Lucy and Ricky Tropicana Club" atmosphere with a number of airy dining rooms and a big bar, an elevator or stairs to get up to the 2nd floor location. The service is excellent and the staff attentive and friendly and food generally very good and plentiful. But apparently it can be hit or miss from day to day and even within the same meal. I had ordered a standard paella which I order at Tampa, Fl area restaurants all the time where I live and have come to expect a certain level of flavorful seasoning ( not necessarily spicy or hot) and volume of shellfish, chicken, sausage and fish in a yellow rice base bowl. This one was a huge, fairly bland supposedly "saffron rice" base with peas, a few cherrystone clam "shells" with overcooked almost non existent clams, a few mussels pretty meaty except for one that had a weird seaweed knot in it that was inedible and had to be manually removed from my mouth for fear of choking, three medium well cooked shrimp and a number of tiny scallops but meager little slivers of chicken, no chorizo or sausage of any kind. Because this is a family favorite for my family, I didn't complain for fear of embarrassing them though if I had been on my own I would have had the sever take it back for a better replacement. To supplement I ordered a broccoli and zucchini side plate which was very dry and required an additional order of drawn butter to make this more palatable. But in the same order, one of my niece's has a wonderful linguini and seafood bowl where the shellfish was more plentiful than my dish, succulent and the garlic sauce apparently quite good. My sister's coconut shrimp dinner was fantastic with real shaved coconut/ panko style breading over large prawns, black beans and yellow rice like mine and the same broccoli but somehow less dry. My mother's and sister's tomato crab soups were excellent but mom's pork chop was partially nicely cooked and juicy yet dry towards the middle, the citrus dressing not apparent and also the bland broccoli. The Caesar salads were however cool, crisp and delicious, nicely seasoned with grated parmesan Caesar dressing. So what can I say? A very pricey meal too at an average of about $25 to $35 dollars a head for 5 diners, $176.00 plus a generous tip for the very attentive waitress. All I can say is next time I'll get a fish dish, ribs or the coconut shrimp dinner. Definitely hit or miss within the same meal which is why I gave them 4 and...
Read moreI was disappointed with my dining experience here, but the drinks and atmosphere are good. First off, not sure what was going on with our waiter but he seemed to be very uninterested and not much knowledge on the menu. I also encountered a staff member who seemed pleasant at first, then when I mentioned how beautiful of a town it was (I was visiting) they proceeded to go on and on about how sick of the view you get and it isn't anything special when you are from there...not a good look when someone is excited to be on vacation there.
I first ordered peel & eat shrimp which are offered hot or cold, I ordered cold. The shrimp came out piping hot, but I decided maybe it is because it is a group of 7 and to let that go, but did not eat them as I do not enjoy hot P&E.
For my main course I ordered the swordfish and asked to have it blackened rather than grilled, but shocker it did not come blackened. When I asked the server his response was "uhhh we don't really blacken things we just put it on the grill longer" which is not true especially considered they had other blackened fish on the menu. He did not offer any resolve to this other than basically he could burn the fish for me. I proceeded to eat only my sides and when the server picked up our plates he seemed confused why I did not touch my fish but did not ask any questions or give any assistance to the bill when clearly there was an issue. To say I left disappointed and hungry was an understatement. The only good thing was the mashed potatoes, I would recommend those.
The atmosphere here is great, and I would go back specifically for drinks, but will not be eating here again. I felt the staff did not care about us as customers and truly had no clue what they were talking about. I recommend the restaurant does some more thorough training on the menu and what terms are when it comes to a seafood restaurant as I was not the only one that left unsatisfied from this meal. Lots of potential, just...
