Quite simply put: The best sushi experience I have ever had!
Is it expensive? Hell yes! $150/person + tax, tip & alcohol makes it not for the faint of heart. But it is totally worth it! It's not just a meal...it's an experience!
The adventure begins before you even arrive. A couple days ahead of your rez, expect an entertaining email that can only come from the Sushi Nazi setting expectations for the evening.
Upon arrival, you'll be huddling with the other 9 diners who get to be led en mass through Sugarfish to the secret restaurant nestled in the back hidden behind a door marked "Staff Only." You cannot help but feel special and excited during this march.
As you enter the room, the intentional intimacy is clear with 10 seats nestled close together around Chef Fujita's sushi bar in a sparsely decorated room that sets a clear focus on Chef Fujita's sushi bar.
Without much haste, the 2 hour parade of amazing and beautiful food begins. While some courses change depending on what's fresh that day, I understand most of the 20 course menu stays the same day to day. Highlights this night included: Octopus: No question this was the best raw octopus I have ever had (which you get to watch Chef Fujita trim off a monstrously large tentacle...I mean Ursula from the Little Mermaid large) Scallop: I am not usually a scallop fan, but LOVED this! The yuzu sauce it was paired with made it divine! Lobster: A raw lobster nigiri with an amazing buttery sweet taste Kinmedai (golden eye snapper): Also my 1st time having this and I PRAY it is not my last. Amazing taste & texture combination!
Chef Fujita is also very humorous and entertaining. He cracks jokes frequently and does a lot to add to the fun of the evening!
WARNING: You really must have an adventurous palate to enjoy this experience because there will undoubtedly be items that you have never had before and/or that sound unappetizing and there are NO substitutions what-so-ever.
My only complaints are: The wine/saki list could be bigger (only 3 sakis to choose from) The nigiri served on warm rice without compression falls apart too easily (yes...even when dipped properly...fish side down) The pace is a touch too fast. I'd like an extra minute or two between each course
While it is damn pricy, it actually almost felt like a value considering how much food was served and the incredible quality and preparation of it. My wife and I both left overfull and very much delighted by the entire experience. Nozawa Bar certainly is not meant to be a regular go-to place, but it is definitely worthy of the occasional splurge or for a special outing!
While I haven't been to all the great sushi spots in LA, I would find it hard to believe that this doesn't sit among the...
Read moreI was visiting my sister who lives in Beverly Hills, this place is her to go to Sushi place, so we walked 3 min to this place and ordered online for pick up. I sat down at their table outside because I pulled a muscle the day before, and the host came storming out, with a very high pitch voice that they have " just sanitized those tables" ...umm there were people sitting here before us! And she said I cannot sit there and repeated it 2 times, so I got up and she said again you cannot stand here! She littlerly shuved us on the side of the side of building! Ok so I live in Texas, and if this was Texas even in our high end places they would have said Ma'am can I have you sit over there and even offer me a glass of water! Now is it because they think they are entitled customers that they have to be rude back with them? L.A I am not feeling you! Lets talk about the food, it was latterly all about the packaging and not so much the quality! Let me talk packaging so we ordered the To-Go Trust me, which was a rectangular white box contained: Organic Edamame - That was good Tuna Sashimi - this was nice Albacore Sushi (2-pc) - not so fresh Salmon Sushi (2-pc) - it was ok Yellowtail* Sushi (2-pc) - very fishy NZ Sea Bream* Sushi (2-pc) - not impressed Fish Cut Roll (4-pc) - this was good Crab Cut Roll (4-pc) - this was good The box has deviders so each time is placed where they do not touch each other which I liked, but thats it! At first after being shuved for sitting down outside (and let me very detailed, those were not set up tables with table cloths and utensils they look like patio furnature), and no one was around us, I swear I would have left and not even ordered, but since we were already here I was like let me see what the fuss was about this place, and to be honest it was not worth it! I have definatly had better! Sorry but I will not be back! And you need to treat people better than that, there was no need for the high voice in front of all those...
Read moreHad an exquisite omakase experience at Nozawa Bar with Chef Fujita. This was a upscale, but still casual, omakase, where the food was immaculate but the chef and servers very friendly and approachable. Chef Fuji is the perfect host for a night here.
Shared this experience with my bestie, and I cannot tell you how happy we were. Arrive on time, as they do promptly start 5 mins after your seating reservation. That said, someone came in late, and the chef caught him up very easily. All phone calls are taken outside, and the room/bar itself is hidden in the back of the Beverly Hills Sugarfish, so you really feel like you're in a secret eating club. It's awesome.
The omakase itself is beautiful and so tasty. It's a much bigger selection than I've ever seen in omakase, and everything tasted amazing.
After dinner, Chef Fuji takes pictures with those guests who want to, and he posts it on his instagram! Seriously - what Japan-trained sushi master makes funny faces with his customers after serving a 22-course omakase that takes your breath away, and then posts it on social media??? amazing.
Truly a gem in LA and I cannot wait...
