My wife and I stopped by for a bite to eat. We are both born and raised right here in Billings and my absolute favorite food is a burger. That being said, my wife had been here before while this was my first time. Here we go:
Love the atmosphere! The old school diner vibes along with the lunch counter make it one of the coolest lunch spots in town for me!
But the food!! Boy howdy...the FOOD!!! So, my wife ordered the Outlaw with regular fries; however, she is not a fan of spicy food so she swapped the pepper jack for gouda. I work IT and video production, but I will try to describe this thing: the gouda gave it a nice rich and kind of creamy flavor which went very well with the sweetness of the caramelized onions. The roasted pablano peppers gave it a hint of smokiness that I feel sent it over the top. It was delicious!
While this was my first time visiting, I know quite a bit about this establishment. Chef/Owner Brad Halston has multiple awards including SOBEWFF Buger Bash winner, "The Best of the Bash" and, literally, one of the world's best burgers, "I'm Your Huckleberry!" Being a Montana native, I felt required to try the Huckleberry Hatch BBQ sauce. The sweet, tart flavor of the Huckleberry hits you first then you get just a kiss of heat from the Hatch Chili. When it combines with the creamy goat cheese and salty bacon, you begin to question if you have been having burgers wrong this whole time. The fresh arugula and savory red pepper mayo round out this culinary masterpiece. Oh, I got the garlic fries.
What is a burger without a shake or a malt? Well, make sure you remember that when you finish your food. They have a great shake menu and they use Wilcoxson's Ice Cream; if you are unaware, they are a long standing dairy/creamery legend in this part of Montana. The menu includes two award winning recipes, I got the Strawberry Balsamic and my wife got the Huckleberry goat cheese. The addition of the goat cheese makes for a pleasant tang and creates an insanely creamy texture.
Do yourself a favor and get down to the Burger Dive! You will not be...
Read moreBased on reviews and infamy I walked into burger dive expecting a good but mildly costly meal. Unfortunately, costly was the only thing I got correct. The burgers are extremely bland lacking any real flavor or legitimate good texture. Both me and my wife could barely finish the absolutely greasy mess that was Both burgers. In addition the ranch dressing was extremely sour, and the fries tasted like below average board walk fries, which is insane since fries cost 5$. This place wouldn't have been so bad if the cost wasn't so high for a quality that was so little. Me and my wife both got a burger, some fries and a drink which costed us over 40$. The burgers for there quality should not have costed anymore than 10$, the abysmal and basic fries should have been 2$ at most and the drinks a dollar or 2. I should not have had to pay over 30$ for both our meals. If this restaurant wants to charge the extremely high cost for the food, they must have the quality to back it up, and they simply do not. Personally I think the restaurant has let its past fame go to its head and is no longer keeping up with the quality it once held during its glory days. The atmosphere and service was fine, but I do not go to a restaurant to gaze at a art show, I got to buy reasonably priced food which tastes good, of which this restaurant had neither. Management and the people who work here should be ashamed of the current state of this restaurant and should seriously consider changing how they make there food for customers to match the absurdly high price of the restaurant, or simply lower there prices to represent the mediocre quality food. Or better yet both. In its current state, I cannot recommend this restaurant to anyone until some changes are made. I had to choose between 3 restaurants when I came to billings and im very dissatisfied and disappointed that I chose this one and I do not plan on returning. DO NOT EAT HERE, unless something...
Read moreI like this place. The downtown Billings location matches its name, and I say that in a positive way. The decor and vibe is reminiscent of diners I’ve walked into during the 1960s. I’m told this location will soon be demolished to make way for a new hotel. I do t live here, but I think I’d rather have this dive. I’m told they already have another location in town. I imagine it wi be about like any other themed restaurant.
Being downtown, it was a hassle finding a place to park. There is a parking garage across the street, but we opted for a metered spot adjacent to the restaurant. That’s a whole nuther review in itself, WHEW!
I’ve been in this place a couple times before when they were slammed, I wasn’t expecting quick service. I did expect friendly service, and that’s just what our table received. They were a little busy, but our wait for food was very reasonable,
I opted for some sort of mushroom & Swiss burger. It was juicy, yet it didn’t drip excess grease when I grabbed the sandwich, just the way a great burger should. The bun to burger ratio was quite good. I never had to revert to a fork to finish my helping. Ingredients were all fresh, a fantastic burger.
The fries were out of this world good. I was very impressed. They were crispy and not greasy at all. The potatoes didn’t need ketchup for flavor. I might have dipped a couple of my friend in my wife’s container of ranch dressing. Whatever I would order here, a requirement would be a side of fries. They were not overcooked, so they were loaded with favor. Did I mention they were loaded with garlic. My Italian mother would have loved these fries. Oh, and they dropped a load of shredded cheese on my fries. Nice touch, folks!!
I’m nog certain this restaurant will be in existence when I return to Billings, so that will be my loss. This was a great meal and a fun experience. Not just another boring fast food joint. This is...
