FINAL EDIT: Finally got in touch with the manager who invited us to return for some of her favorite dishes. The experience was much better. To start, the place was hopping. Service was excellent as always and they're very helpful with dietary restrictions and allergies (we had a person with celiac disease in our party).
We were brought the following: Edamame, which was excellent - served warm with large flakes of sea salt. Hit the table at the perfect temperature and doneness - delicious. Chu-toro - this was a tough spot for us last time. Today it was excellent with the silky softness that comes with a mid-fatty tuna. Very fresh, no "fishiness". Fried rice with short-rib - not a super complicated dish, but generous in portion and delicious when you got all the components in every bite. Filling and well-balanced in flavors. Kobe sliders with fries - these guys know how to make sliders and fries. Easy to recommend. Perfectly cooked and luscious. Sekushi maki - this is the sort of roll we normally steer clear of as too-cute, losing the essence of the fish, and generally not great to eat. They strongly recommended it though so we gave it a shot. It has salmon, scallop, truffle aioli, avocado and pear. I'm just going to say it - this was delicious - way better than it had any business being. While I'd consider it more of a composed dish including raw fish than a traditional maki, this still brought forward the flavors of the seafood without them being buried in sauces and other components. I'd 100% order this again.
I don't know what the issue was when we were here before - maybe we just came when the fish wasn't fresh. We were told it had come in the day we dined this time (Friday) so all was very fresh. We didn't have the wagyu this time so can't comment on whether that's improved or not. This is a meat that's really meant to be seared quickly and served immediately so if it's coming cold it wouldn't be my first choice.
Regardless, the setting is still cool, the music is good but unobtrusive, the service is excellent, and the food we had was all very good. Not cheap but a good option for special company.
ORIGINAL REVIEW: The setting is cool and comfortable, the service is good, but the food is a real mixed bag of good to seriously disappointing, with what should be the most luxurious (and expensive) items on the menu being a real disappointment.
On the good side, the crab salad, the tempura rock shrimp, and the nigiri/sashimi bluefin, hamachi, and salmon all were quite good.
On the disappointing side, the rest of the fish (o-toro, chu-toro, branzino, scallop, octopus) all came across as nearly flavorless. The ikura had a funny flavor and darker-than-normal color - maybe they marinate it in something? I don't know, but it wasn't good. O-toro is fatty tuna, but the 3 (very expensive) pieces neither looked nor tasted fatty. The entire point of Miyazaki A5 wagyu is that it's a luxurious and fatty cut of beef. The (again, extremely expensive) pieces that came to us were cooked to within an inch of their lives and as nearly fatless as any steak I've ever seen.
I wish I could say better as their sister-restaurant, Zao Jun is generally excellent. Sadly, this location does not live up to...
Read moreYesterday, 10/19/25, my husband and I went in to have the best of Birmingham Burger. It was our first time visiting the restaurant. The restaurant was lovely. We got married during cherry blossom season in DC, so the decor spoke to me. The hostess was kind and sat us early as we arrived about 20minutes before our 5pm reservation. She sat us at a 2 top by the hostess stand. Sat for a while before our server came over. He was a younger kid. He was nice enough, but can’t remember his name. We told him we were going to split the burger, but also got a sushi roll and the pork belly buns as our appetizer. My husband ordered a sprite and I ordered an iced tea. My husband’s sprite was delivered, but my iced tea wasn’t.. The sushi roll and buns came out. The buns were good, but only with the spicy sauce. The sushi was fresh and delicious. We were halfway through the roll when our server came over and asked if we wanted wasabi, ginger and soy sauce. We said no, but I said I would love my iced tea. He said. “Oh I thought it came out” and went and got it. It had been easily 20minutes by then, if not longer. He didn’t check on us. He was too busy schmoozing a party of ladies most of the time. Every time we were looking for him he was at their table. My husband had to flag him down to get a refill. The burger was dropped at our table. As my husband was cutting it in half, our waiter wandered over and said,”I was gonna have it cut, but I see you’ve got it.” The burger was lights out! So juicy and just chefs kiss! The fries and spicy ketchup were soo good and crunchy! I sat with an empty glass since before the burger was done being eaten. We had prebussed our table, and were waiting for him to come over for at least five minutes. He came asked us if we’d like dessert. Then asked me if I wanted a refill. Um, no! Honestly, for such a restaurant to have such poor service in hoity toity Birmingham, was very disappointing! We’ve been to some of the other spot for “The Best Of Birmingham Burger” spot at had exemplary service. We purposely go dressed in a manner of lesser to see what we get. We are those people. And we tip accordingly. We tipped him 15%, I told my husband ten for the awful service but my husband is a generous man. We are normally 25-35%. It wasn’t warranted in this instance. I only took a pic of the sushi...
Read moreI normally eat at Adachi 3 times a week, I am a very good customer, I bring clients and new customer often, buy and provided gift cards to client, I order and spend a lot of money every visit, and I am very generous with the severs and bartenders. Unfortunately Adachi is under new Management and most of the other awesome managers and servers are no longer there. The new GM is doing a disservice to this Restaurant, the Customers, Staff and Owners. I dinned here twice in the last few day and once last week and have been very disappointed with the quality of the food and for the first time recently have not finished or was unable to eat food that wad served. Today on my sons Birthday we ordered many items one of the items was a sizzling rib cap steak dish, which in the past has always been amazing. Just last week we ordered this to be cooked medium it came not sizzling and the steak raw and cold. The same thing took place tonight. I did not report the issues the last 2 previous time to the manager but decided based on the decline of the food I involve the new GM this time. He came to the table not quickly, apologized and ask how I would like the issue resolved? I told him we would like the dish properly replaced. Not sure why that would even be asked. But when the dish was returned it again was not sizzling and the GM decided to just reheat the same $60 appetizer and reserve it. It was horrible, there were many other issues and problems. As mentioned we were there for my sons birthday, which this was clearly noted in my Resy Reservation which the new GM read, sat us and failed to inform our server about my sons birthday, The other manager who left for another opportunity knew who I was ,Always went out of his way to say hello to me and my guests, showed that he appreciated my business. He would have made sure something special would have been done for my son on his birthday. This unfortunately will be my last time Dinning here for awhile, it’s a shame because this used to be one of my favorite restaurants. But the service and quality has extremely diminished and it starts with the General Manager who clearly just does not...
