Atmosphere: Place is ok to meet people or to study, but definitely not a good coffee house for that. The smell is pretty bad at times, since it's in a basment-like space. When Starbucks beats you as a place to chill and talk, there's a problem. The one in Jordan square has almost no places to sit, so nix that as a spot. The newest one is probably the nicest space, and biggest! Lots of light, too!
Coffee: Drip coffee is pretty good, and only occasionally burt... and Starbucks is usually burnt, if you can't tell. Apparently I should say "roasted too long," so that's what I should say, but it tastes burnt. Coffee is also often single source and/or organic, so that's pretty awesome. Espresso tastes like any espresso I've ever had. No extra flavors I can detect.
Speciality drinks: Yeah, I've decided to avoid those. I've had most of the stuff on the menu at the three in town, and they're not really good. They try to be interesting by adding weird flavors, and it just isn't working. They have a pb one that tastes like chocolate, for a bit, but then it's just a bunch of stuff collected on the bottom of your cup. Cold or hot, they typically do both, and I have liked about 1/4 of the drinks I've had. I can't believe I prefer Starbucks with their weird sugary syrup concoctions, but I do. I think Soma needs a better method of blending or something. No good. You don't wanna have spent 4+$ on a drink and have it be terrible. Starbucks makes me a new one if I try something and hate it, they don't. That's a big deal to me. If you spend a lot, and it doesn't cost them much, they should take it back... and those speciality drinks rake in the money at these places.
Food: pretty good pastries, with lots of vegan options. They sometimes have gluten free, too. Meals, burritos or salads typically by laughing planet. Those are pretty good, overall. My favorite thing about the place is the pastries... which isn't a good thing when they're not making them and it's a coffee house.
Staff: Starbucks generally has nicer staff, which I consider a problem in a coffee house. Staff should be as nice as, if not nicer than Starbucks people. If they're not, I figure they're not people who should work in a coffee shop and/or unhappy with the job. The guys working there with food often have significant beads... and no bead nets. That seems pretty gross to me, when you're mixing...
Read moreOut of all of the Soma locations this is the best! It has fantastic, out of this world service and the atmosphere hasn’t changed too much (bring back Godzilla legs lamp and King Kong in the tv fish tank) since I first started going in 2014. My drinks always come out spot on, and I’d try the food if it wasn’t priced ridiculously high. Bravo to the staff, drinks, and atmosphere. So, the reason why I’m giving this Soma a three star review is due to the fact that when I sit in the coffee shop I sweat. And no I don’t sweat because of the hot coffee or because I am a profuse sweater. The sweating is actually due to the AC still being broken! It feels that’s been broken for two years now. It seems like the owner doesn’t care about their customers being comfortable in their establishment. I see other customers uncomfortably sweating and some even asking the employees to turn the AC down to make it colder. Yet, they can’t. On top of that the employees seem miserable sweating all shift. No offense to the staff, but I don’t want their sweat in my drink too. So at the end of the day, the reason why I’m giving this Soma a three star is not because of the staff or the drinks or the atmosphere. It’s due to the fact that the owner seems to not want to take care of the basic up keep for the coffee shop and shows the lack of care for the well being of customers and employees. P.S. Get a better bike rack for the east side. Bikes can easily get stolen when locked up on that joke of...
Read moreI used to go here until I returned one day for a replacement coffee for a watered-down one on a previous day. An older blonde woman working there recognized me and mumbled to the younger, darker-haired female, "He's probably here for a refund" and "If he asked me, I would just flip him the finger." I asked the darker-haired and younger woman if it would be posdible to get a replacemrnt coffee because their coffee was watered-down the previous day. I was promptly told, "No." I asked if there was anything they can do to make it stronger and was told by the older-blonde wonan working there, "The amount we put in is predetermined and we cannot make it stronger." I used to like Soma for its atmosphere, but now find the business rude, disrespectful and hateful towards someone as myself, who merely was trying to help and get a replacement coffee for a wateted-down and one; that never left me feeling like I took in caffeine. I now go to the new Coffe Beanery Bloomington up the street on the corner of 3rd ang Grant Street, where at least they remade the coffee when it was watered-down, replaced my coffee and even thanked me for my help. Why return to a business like this Soma where the employees act like bigots and treat...
