101 years old theatre! A historic gem with charm, character, and incredible performances! This place is the heart of live entertainment in Bloomington. From concerts and film screenings to theater productions and community events, it offers something for everyone.
Walking into the theater, I was struck by its beautiful 1920s architecture, with its vintage marquee lighting up the street. The intimate setting means every seat has a great view, and the acoustics are fantastic, making it a perfect place to enjoy live music or a film. I attended a local music performance, and the experience felt warm and personal, with a great connection between the performers and the audience.
The staff and volunteers were incredibly friendly and helpful, adding to the welcoming atmosphere. I also appreciated how the theater supports local artists and community events, making it a true part of Bloomington’s cultural life.
This place is more than just a theater—it’s a space for creativity, community, and unforgettable performances. Whether you’re here for a show, a movie, or just to admire the historic charm, it’s a must-visit in Bloomington for lovers...
Read moreI typically visit the Buskirk Chumley to hear the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra play. I use will-call, which has its own entrance to the left of the front doors. Once inside you can enter the theater by walking up the few stairs at the back of that room. The service is always exceptional and the wide variety of their offerings make the downtown an exciting place to be.
From greeters at the door, to the ticket takers and concessions; everyone is cheerful and friendly. The building itself is exquisite. It has been around since the early 1920’s and has a wonderful Art Deco feel to it.
For those of you with accessibility needs: It is important to note that there is some handicapped seating on the first floor (orchestra level) and you will be able to navigate from the road to your seat, as well as restrooms with no stairs to grapple with. There is no elevator or powered doors in the building. To use the will-call, you’ll need to enter the door to the left of the Buskirk Chumley, collect your tickets and then go out that same door to be able to enter. I hope you have a wonderful time!

Read moreI was annoyed by the ushers who came and sat on a bench directly in front of us in the balcony. They effectively blocked the view for myself and one other, because we were on the first row of the second tier of seats in the balcony against the left wall facing the stage, and they were low. We PAID for these seats, and to have those two ushers sit directly in the way of our view of the stage was maddening. It was originally a movie theater, so the main focus for the way the seats are arranged is above the stage level where the middle of the screen would be. However, you have to look down to the stage level to see the actors. All I saw was the backs of the heads of the 2 women ushers sitting on this bench. They seemed to enjoy the performance that we, the paying customers did not get to see. Will not be going back because of this. Too much to pay for tickets only to have these ushers sneak in and...
