Can't say enough about this great restaurant in Boerne that our daughter found.
In brief: Amazing, freshly made to order, grilled (not fried) pupusas. Horchata, curtido, salsas, rice and beans. All authentically & freshly made. Amazing decor and personal pictures from travels by the owners. As a vegan/vegetarian group, we can't speak personally to the meat dishes, but they look and smell authentic as well. Saw several people walking away shaking their heads in disbelief at how delicious their meal was.
In detail: Last weekend we went for our second time. It was just as good if not better than the first time! We also were privileged to meet the owners on this trip. As busy as they were, they took time to chat with us in between tending to others. The pupusas are airy and not greasy. Carlos (El Salvadorean) and I are currently vegan. We had the plate with 2 pupusas (bean and loroco) and (bean and jalepeno), rice and beans. We also ordered a side of fried plantains to share. When we first went in December, our daughter and her family were with us. We were served by a delightful woman who explained all the options. They ordered cheese pupusas and horchata which were also delicious. One of the granddaughters had a bean and cheese taco. We also tried the Tamalitos de Elote con Crema which we ordered as an appetizer. You will want to order an appetizer, because the pupusas are made fresh which takes a bit, but are SOOOO worth the wait. I'm sure you could order ahead if needed. Casa Amaya is a cultural experience worth...
Read moreI ordered the carne asada breakfast taco however in a bowl. I asked for extra avocado once they provided however it was rotted. At least half of it was. They bring me a bowl of tiny pieces of Carne Asada with onions cilantro and the portion was so small it would have been enough to feed maybe a 5-year-old at best. I didn't realize it didn't come with eggs or anything else so not sure why they call it a breakfast bowl why not just call it a side of carne. I was more or less disappointed that they were trying to give me old meat that wasn't freshly cooked. They brought it back to me after I spoke with the owner who seemed offended it's as if they took what was in the bowl however my food just was not hot and it was very disappointing the portion was still very small even with the eggs and cheese added maybe enough to feed a 5-year-old. This was highly disappointing. Curious question also when I went through my very first time y'all had nice fresh salsa with chips. I guess you have done away with that experience. I always frown upon any restaurants that use day-old food in front of heat it back up. Why not do the fresh experience? I won't be back. I guess thanks for the experience definitely was...
Read moreHighly recommend. I've passed by this restaurant many times, convinced that it would be overpriced, while also being barely edible, like so many restaurants in Boerne. This place is far from that. The music was pleasant, the service (our waitress was Lupe) was very good, and the price and quality of the food was thoroughly satisfying. The sauces each have unique flavor profiles: a couple very mild ones, an incredibly spicy one, and one with a good kick. I got the Papusa plate with one bean and cheese and one cheese and loroco (edible flower). I definitely prefer the loroco, but the beans were quite good, as was the rice. It was the perfect amount of food to satiate my appetite and I am thrilled with my experience. My boyfriend was very content with his carne asada street tacos. We will certainly...
