Edit: it’s been 2 months since I’ve started to frequent Mr. Jalapeño here in Bonney Lake. This restaurant is slowly tearing my life apart. My boyfriend has left me. I can no longer afford my car or house because I spend all my money here. I’ve had to quit my job because of my love for this restaurant. I will never love any other man other than Mr. Jalapeño himself. Someone send help.
Used to frequent Mazatlan down the road- love the atmosphere there and I finally tried this place after a handful of recommendations. This is definitely my new go-to spot! The drinks, the food, and the service all make this place amazing. The restaurant itself was clean and newer, no ripped seats or sticky tables/menus. The chips and salsa were average, about what’d you expect at any Mexican restaurant. I ordered a classic margarita on the rocks and it was perfect- not too sweet but not too strong. The food is where this place stands out and earns its 5 stars- I ordered camarones a la crema- the crema sauce is hands down the best I’ve tasted. So rich and so much flavor. The shrimp were perfectly cooked and so tender. A huge plus for this restaurant is the vegetarian friendly refried beans made with vegetable oil instead of lard. No loss in flavor but one less of a worry for a pescatarian/vegetarian. My boyfriend ordered steak ranchero and was very happy with the cooking of the steak- it was nice and tender. He also loved my crema sauce and was stealing some for his tacos he was making. The last stand out of this restaurant are the tortillas- I order flour every time and they’re clearly homemade and delicious! You can eat them plain if you want. My SO alternates between flour and corn and says the same for the corn tortillas. All homemade and all delicious! Thank you Mr. Jalapeño- you are my new spot in...
Read moreMy spouse said she was up to try something new. We have several chains in Pierce county that fill the Mexican niche, and they're all pretty good. But there's always an opportunity for something new.
Entering the restaurant, it was obvious they were buzzing. Later, we determined many of those folks are regulars, a good indication of a great restaurant. We were seated immediately, and the young man I took for a a busser, stepped up and got us drinks. Funny enough, the management checked on him several times too, but he was always appreciably ahead.
I have a soft spot for a good traditional Molé sauce, and I've tried most of the south-end restaurants' molé. They're okay- leaving me more than a disappointed. So, I asked for a sample of the sweet Molé sauce at Mr Jalapenos. I found out, after it was delivered, that they had to warm it up (a good Molé is a long process and it's best to freeze and reheat if it's not the only dish you're serving). I was very thankful for the sample as it informed my entree selection: grilled chicken breast Pollo En Molé. Really, really good. The right amount of char to balance out the sweet Molé.
My spouse had the Camerones A la Crema, something she'd been craving for a while. She frequently had issues with undercooked onions but everything about the dish at Mr Jalapenos was what she wanted - the rich sauce featuring well cooked tailless shrimp in a creamy sauce, enriched with plenty of spice.
The service was outstanding, from our young waiter to the leaders, multiple people checked on us and asked us about our experience throughout dinner. If you're a fan of great traditional Mexican food, you will not be disappointed in...
Read moreStopped in to Mr jalapeño a few nights ago to get some food to go. I ordered deluxe nachos, tortilla soup and a side of rice and bean's. I specifically asked if I could get a half and half order of the sides as it was $5 for each and didn't feel I needed a full side of each and didn't want to spend $10 on a side dish. The person taking my order agreed to give me half and half, so I though that was cool. The total was $54! $54, for basically two appetizers and a side. I was astonished! I realized after getting our food that I was charged for two sides and they just put it together in a bigger container. The tortilla soup doesn't even have cheese in it! That was a first, lame! If we would have dined in it would have cost even more from adding a couple of drinks and a tip! They also gave us only 2 little containers of salsa, not nearly enough for what we had, so I had to go back in for salsa, and again for a fork at which time I also grabbed some napkins which were right behind the register in stack, looking totally placed there for putting in to-go bags, but non were given. The penny pinching in this place is painfully obvious and, well, just not right for a place that charges as much as they do. I'm done with this place, going back to Mazatlan! There tortilla soup is better and less expensive, and it has...
