We always stay at Brown's Wharf when we come to Boothbay Harbor, but for whatever reason we never dined at the Carousel / Whale’s Tale which is directly next door. On this Sept 30th, 2023 evening, we went there for dinner. The food is superb and a culinary treat! I had the lobster bisque which was rich with lobster stock (not sherry) and had an abundant amount of prime lobster meat, and my husband had the seafood stew which was also stocky and had a ton of pieces of seafood; you could definitely tell that the chefs used their own recipe and made everything in-house. For our entrees, I had seared scallops over risotto; the scallops were perfectly glazed and the risotto was a cheesy, creamy delight. My husband had Haddock Piccata; the lemony, caper goodness over the just-the-right-amount of al dente fettuccine was amazing. I caught the owner before we left and told him that there was something special about this food. He said that the chefs are best friends and they love what they do. Well it truly shows! P.S. the waitstaff was perfect and there was an outdoor seating area with a real wood-burning pit which felt amazing on this cool evening and smelled so rustic. We will definitely be back to the Whale’s Tale again and again - this seems like...
Read moreWe picked this place because the movie Carousel was filmed there and it has a pretty good nonseafood restaurant. One thing about Boothbay Harbor is that if you are a seafood lover, this is your place. If you are not you might need to work a little harder to find good options.
Anyway it was alright. They weren't very knowledgeable about their beer selection and were out of quite a few things. What we got was good though. Most of us weren't hungry but got the blueberry cobbler which was delicious. My husband was hungrier and got a prime rib sandwich which he declared to be "decent but unremarkable."
They also had a band playing outside. The music was pretty good.
Was it the greatest experience of our lives? No not really. Was it fine? Yes. Also real talk if you don't eat seafood in this town as is my husband's situation, this is basically your best bet. Everywhere else basically has one pity dish but here you have...
Read moreI have never taken the time to write a review but this one is worth it. I have NEVER been so disappointed and honestly, disgusted by a restaurant. I got a vegetable wrap and the wrap consisted of a steal wrap , pouring grease from the massive amount of cheese, and what tasted like canned mushrooms . Both the pickle and the watermelon were rotten. The description of this vegetable wrap with grilled peppers, onions, mushrooms, in a spinach and artichoke dip was absolutely not what I received . All two of my onion rings tasted like they were microwaved and our meal took roughly an hour to come out with only about 10 other people in the entire restaurant. We were not asked one single time how our food was (which was obvious considering my plate was missing 2 bites when she took it) and our cup of ice with a splash of water was never refilled. This was the worst 75 dollars I...
