Okay, here's the deaL: When you live in the South End, you tend to cluster your take-our business based on what's closest to you. I live on the other end of the South End from Cafe Quattro, making it almost a "special treat" to order. It's rare, but ALWAYS worth it. One of my favorite pizza pies in the city.
The arguments go one and on about "what makes a good pizza." Is it the dough? Is it the sauce? Is it the quality of the toppings? What is the formula? I, myself go back and forth on the answer to this question, but I know Quattro has a winning formula.
That said, I LOVE their dough! That perfect mixture of chewy and crackle on the edges – never tough and never stiff. Whatever they set their oven temperature, it is perfect. While their success and toppings seem terrific, I am going in on the treat being the dough.
That said their red sauce is perfect for a pie. Just sweet enough, and JUST seasoned enough, it makes a "plain" pie a treat but doesn't argue with toppings. Now maybe it's a very simple recipe, but even if it is some special secret, they have a great balance.
Now, I am leaning on the food because it is a tae out spot, but other reviews of the staff are not exaggerated. Always friendly in a genuine way, there is no "glazed behind the register" attitude or any gruffness. I have been in t here when it's moderately busy, but the charm and friendly banter is still there. Indeed, my first time ordering they seemed genuinely happy and helpful; like they really wanted me happy, not just wanted my money. It's a great small business attitude.
I have lived in this neighborhood for decades, and truth be told I generally make my own pizza at home 95% of the time. But that said, I will gladly take the "inconvenient trek" across the city to bike home a pie from Quattro. Here's hoping they stick around for...
Read moreThis review makes me sad because I used to love this place. I would eat here 3 days a week when the previous owner was around. Ever since he sold it off, the new owners have been making subtle changes that have made the place really go downhill. It started with a very slight price increase when they first took over. Then they did little things like not advertise the special pizza of the day or not refill the shakers. Now they have drastically cut down the size of the slices of pizza while keeping the price the same as before. It used to be a quarter of a pizza for about the 5 dollar cost of a slice. Just a couple weeks ago they started cutting the pizza in 6 slices and kept the price exactly the same. They say they are making the pizza larger, but its still a significant decrease in quantity for the same price. The line used to be half a block at lunchtime to get in here. I have noticed a significant decrease in traffic so I must not be the first person to notice this. Unfortunately they are on a slow path to closing if they keep...
Read moreCame on a whim after not doing our research and finding that our original destination across the street was closed on the weekends, so we decided to pop in here. It was before 11:30am on a Saturday, so not quite lunch rush time, so we ordered and got our seats right away.
I got an iced tea from the fridge and ordered pesto pasta, which was delicious. For such a casual joint, this might be one of my favorite pesto pastas I've had in a while. It was also more than enough for me to save for leftovers.
By noontime, more and more people came in, and it seems it's quite popular with folks at the medical center nearby. The seating area isn't the biggest, but it never felt crowded.
I would definitely come back for a casual, affordable, and...
