If you are looking for a truly unique and authentic Boston-Style pizza, you have to give Dirty Water Dough a try! It is one of the best slices I’ve ever had, hands-down.
Dirty Water was originally an ode to Boston’s polluted Charles River. Pizza makers and residents alike turned to using beer to make pizza- given the water was too polluted to drink.
The pizza here is top-notch. The dough is made using their in-house, Dirty Water IPA. They also hand-stretch their dough. The dough is super thin, yet crispy. It isn’t too heavy and it isn’t too airy. It is JUST right.
Dirty Water has a solid selection of unique, “speciality” pizzas. The cool part: each location has unique offerings. If you’re more of a purist, they do have all the classic/traditional options. They will happily make any pizza into a calzone for a small up-charge.
They have a generous selection of additional ingredients to make your pie exactly how you want it. Their traditional dough is egg, dairy, and nut free. They also offer gluten-free options and vegan cheese!
In addition to pizza, they have a solid selection of sandwiches, salads, and a huge selection of in-house, bottled beverages. We added a few of their craft beverages to our order. The lemonades are phenomenal and come in glass bottles. You must add one (or multiple) to your order!
Given this was our first visit, we decided to go with a classic: Pepperoni. Our pie was made with shredded mozzarella, house red sauce, pepperoni, and Romano cheese. Toppings and cheese coverage was on point- no skimping here. No issues with toppings or cheese sliding off.
The tough decision was choosing the right size. They offer two options: 12” or 18”. From experience at most places, 12” is typically meant for a single person. That said, we went with the 18”.
The pizza was absolutely ginormous. I smirk a bit thinking about how the delivery folks fit the box into their car. The pizza was delivered piping-hot and it was in perfect condition- no issues with cheese or toppings sliding around during transport.
The pepperoni was plentiful and the sauce was just right: not too sweet and not too acidic. I am very particular when it comes to the sauce on my pizza. The pizza dough itself was incredibly thin, yet crispy.
The slice can easily be “folded” and eaten like a NY slice. Despite being so thin, the crust easily supports the cheese and toppings without flopping on you. I typically am the person to toss the crust. Not here! The crust is incredibly light and goes perfectly with a side of their house-made ranch. It is genuinely the best I have had, it is well worth the small up-charge!
I look forward to ordering from Dirty Water Dough company again. I am originally from Chicago and we take our pizza seriously. This is one of the best slices on the East Coast. Easily the best slice I have had since moving to Boston!
My only recommendation would be is to offer a “middle ground” between the 12” and 18” sizes.
We ordered the 18” and could only have two slices each before we were stuffed! The slices are ginormous! I wish they would indicate on their menu how many slices come in each size pizza. We would’ve likely gone with the smaller 12” and added on a fresh salad. I am sure others have encountered this when the pizza arrived!
The slices are HUGE. Luckily, we will have left-overs for lunch tomorrow! I look forward to ordering here again and on the regular! I cannot wait to try their “Mediterranean” speciality pizza next visit!
If you have a craving for a Boston-style slice, you have to give Dirty Water Dough a try! You won’t be disappointed. I wish I had tried it sooner! My new go-to for a solid...

I ordered a small margherita calzone with added spinach and mushrooms. The small is important. They said it would take 65 to 75 minutes, but in reality I had to call the restaurant after 90 asking where it was, and didn't get it until almost two hours from ordering! The delivery man was polite and looked stressed, I don't blame him.
He handed me a HUGE pizza box and I asked confused if this was just one small calzone, and he said it was.
Any semblance of appearance for this calzone had gone out the window in the time it took to get here. It was soggier than a wet newspaper in the gutter and barely warm to the touch. It was also HUGE- close to twice as large as the "small" I ordered. This might sound silly- who doesn't like more food? But I had wanted to store it in the hotel fridge and the box was just impossibly large.
After trying to pick a slice up without dumping the filling, or the soggy crust at this point, onto the floor, the taste was just ok. The tomatoes were fresh, and that caused so much liquid to accumulate that the whole thing was just unpalatably moist.
I did like the fresh spinach used, which I admit may also added to the liquid problem. But it was not the sole source!
There was also so little cheese and basil that I could taste nothing of margherita. All I could taste was tomatoes and tomato juice soaked spinach and mushrooms. It...
Read moreIf you're like me, after a day full of strolling and shopping on Newbury Street, all you really want is a cold beer and a solid slice.
Dirty Water may not be the most appetizing name for a restaurant, but any Boston local will appreciate the reference as well as the locally-sourced ingredients. They also have their own Dirty Water IPA on the drink list ($5)! I'm not a hoppy girl, but the flavor was good with the pizza, and they brought out 2 cups so my friend and I could split one.
Their location on Newbury can't be beat, and the atmosphere is cool and casual. If you're lucky, you could even snag one of the two tables surrounded by glass overlooking the street. Just place your order at the counter... luckily they have some of their specialty pizzas available by the slice!
We went for 2 chicken enchilada pizza slices ($3.75 each) which boasts seasoned chicken chunks, lettuce, tomato, cheese, and sour cream. Ask for jalapenos for the full "Mexican" pizza experience! The friendly staff member picked out our slices and put them in the oven. When we received them, they could have been hotter, but the flavor was pretty great.
Apparently the Boston-based ingredients are the secret to their tasty dough and toppings! Gotta love that...
