Ordered: 4/28/25 Lunch and ate inside
Beet Salad 10.99- Good. I added Chicken. Grilled Chicken 4.99 VERDICT: Good. Get a Balsamic or dijon dressing.
Rice & Beans 4.99 Words I never thought I would say, but how do you mess up rice and beans? BY GIVING SOMEONE HARD OLD COLD RICE AND OLD BEANS. I am not joking. I immediately had to call over the wait staff. I am told the person messed it up, and they were out of rice. HARD SIDE EYE. This establishment where rice comes with half of the dishes? She asks if I want to order a replacement dish. I say no.
Then not long after she comes back with rice. I know they re-steamed some of the same old rice because it was still a little tough, but edible, so I let it go. At least this I could chew and not feel like I am breaking my teeth, was warm and tasted 100% better. I also know because I was near the kitchen and heard someone in the kitchen literally say, " Oh no, I didn't make any new rice. I just added some water and heated it up a bit it is fine.
I get trying to protect your profit margins, but at least make sure the rice is warm and not hard! VERDICT: SKIP. DO NOT DO IT- Unless you ask if the rice was made fresh.
4 Single Egg 7.96 VERDICT: EAT THIS- my sunnyside eggs were made perfectly, and delicious.
HOT 12oz Chai Tea Latte 4.25 While tasty, it wasn't warm enough. Like it was just warm. VERDICT: SKIP
Yuquita Frita 4.99 Delicious! I grew up eating this stuff, so it was a bit of nostalgia. VERDICT: EAT THIS!
ICED 16oz Aguapanela 3.49 Ask for extra lime if you get it cold like I did. Refreshing, but not super sweet. VERDICT: DRINK THIS
Green Hulk 6.99 Why hurt people this way? It was mainly orange juice and spinach, which is a weird combo to drink down, which I did. The orange and slight bitter from the spinach, was an off-putting combo. It was rough. Maybe needed more banana and something else added. VERDICT: DO NOT DRINK! SKIP!
Sweet Plantains 4.99 Yummy and tasted normal and nice and sweet. VERDICT: EAT THIS
Lovely vibe. Wheelchair accessible nice long booths and tables. Bathroom door a little narrow from what I saw so just be mindful. Loved the chalkboard words of encouragement.
The island music playing softly in the background, and the televisions were muted with closed captions on, which I appreciated.
They do serve alcohol, but I didn't get anything like that to drink.
Only one person as waitstaff working the floor, but she moved pretty quickly.
I also liked how you could pay your bill from your phone WITHOUT DOWNLOADING AN APP! Amazing! I wish more places did this!
Overall VERDICT: A bit of a confusing bummer. I heard so many good things about this place and the food excluding the Yuca, eggs, and plantain- mainly left in their natural states, otherwise was just okay or bad.
The portions were also a bit small as well.
I am not a local, and it is clearly a local spot because many people came in and yelled back a hello to the kitchen staff or waitstaff by name. Just because I am not local does not mean I am unworthy of decent food. Like I got what they were trying to still get rid of from Saturday night from the items that were not good.
Maybe their breakfast and dinner folks will fare better than I did for lunch, but it was too much money to spend to leave so dissatisfied.
I also had to speak to some of the inappropriate talk from one of the staff in the kitchen. Dude you don't get to blame and make fun or rape victims! Not okay.
I am so confused as to why this was my experience after all the good reviews. It was my meal for the day, so I ate my food. I left full,...
Read moreUnfortunately, after hearing about how good this place was I have to say I was more than unimpressed from the painfully slow service (restaurant was empty) to the lackluster food. I ordered grilled chicken with rice & beans & spinach in garlic butter. The chicken was served room temperature, very dry and had ZERO flavor/seasoning...none, nada. The spinach had the consistency of Gerber baby spinach in a jar & due to the burnt garlic was un-edible, however the red beans & rice were good. The Duo empanadas were cooked to perfection but also lacked any real or distinguished flavor. The food took at least 40 minutes to arrive and again when it did arrive it was room temperature as if it had been sitting. Might I also mention that I had ordered a coconut Margarita and that took at least 20 minutes. It took so long that I had forgotten that I had ordered it. The margarita tasted like pure sour/margarita mix with a splash of coconut so that was also undrinkable. The waitress seemed unfazed by all of this & only checked on us toward the end of the meal, actually had to grab her attention just to ask for salad dressing since none was offered because I guess most people don't like ANY kind of dressing on their salad...smh. I also noticed that when certain other patrons entered the establishment there was a slightly better attentiveness of service given to them. Don't know what that was about but I can only imagine and I would hate to think it had to do with the Melanin in my skin and it's not far fetched because I've seen & experienced this type of behavior from gentrified/progressive JP in the past and recently. Maybe it was an off day or maybe it wasn't but please do better because I'm sure you can....
Read moreI was excited to support a local, small business vs a franchise like IHOP. My experience today:
Interior entrance was littered with leaves that presumably blew in from the door being open to facilitate easy service to outside tables, but wouldn’t have hurt the staff to sweep them up and dispose of them, say hourly? Seat yourself seating, first table was sticky. Second table was sticky. Asked waitress to wipe down table. She missed spots. Was still sticky. Perhaps needed more than just water for wipe down? Ordered a strawberry shake. 10mins later. Waitress says they’re out of strawberry shakes but I can have vanilla or chocolate, OR a strawberry smoothie...but why not take the strawberries from the smoothie to make the strawberry shake? ...I ordered juice. My co-diner ordered a dish that comes with toast. I ordered one that did not, so I asked for a side of toast. Both of us ordered white toast. Waitress brings me wheat toast, which I was fine to eat, but never brings the white toast that accompanies the first dish. Waitress seemed visibly distressed over the request for the toast. Co-diner finishes her meal before the toast even arrives. Food was fine. Eggs tasty. But nothing that wowed me over just going to IHOP. Decor and ambiance nothing special, lacking really. Adjacent table of 4 people received their food at different times, and one of their dishes had incorrect eggs.
Overall, seemed like the staff was overwhelmingly busy although there were only 6 occupied tables, including both indoors and out. Seemed like the restaurant was very busy with to-go and in-person orders and couldn’t prioritize...
