A very solid dining experience on the main shopping street of West Roxbury. Protip: there is a parking lot right across the street.
0.5 star- ambiance. Well-lit and clean restaurant with nice Thai pop (I think?) playing in the background. Bathroom was clean as well. Not exactly fancy or particularly quirky but a little 1 star- taste. Everything was yummy. The mango sticky rice came with fresh mango, which we loved. The glass noodle appetizer was pretty special, with spicy ground chicken and glass noodles as well as celery greens. We had to forcibly prevent ourselves from eating everything so we'd have leftovers for the next day. 1 star- friendly, fast service. We were the only dine-in customers in the restaurant and the server balanced speed, attentiveness, and friendliness very well. 1 star- value. We had a Nift so saved $15 but otherwise, apps are $10 or under, entrees are $10-20, and desserts are $5-8. Reasonable prices. 0.5 star- innovation. The glass noodle salad appetizer was really tasty -- good balance of heat and acidity -- but otherwise everything else on the menu appeared to be standard Thai...
Read moreI tried SomTum tonight for the first time. I ordered take out. It was horribly sub-standard. They got one order wrong, delivering chicken in mango curry instead of shrimp, even though the order ticket said shrimp. The Tom Yum soup was tasteless and the shrimp overcooked. The pad thai was super oily and tasted strongly of vinegar and little else--no subtlety. It was supposed to be shrimp and chicken, but there was only one shrimp and the chicken was dry and tough. The scallion panckakes were dry and old, with hardly any scallion, and the fry oil they used tasted old. The seaweed salad side dish was watery and slimy. I couldn't even swallow one bite. I was afraid it was rotten. The worst seaweed salad I've ever had. I don't know how anyone could like this place, especially with the fabulous Phu-Ket down the street, where the food has rich, subtle flavors and the ingredients are fresh and expertly prepared. SomTum will not last long with this...
Read moreOne of the best restaurants for Thai food that I have been to. I’ve been eating Authentic Thai food since the late 70’s. I was pleasantly surprised when I tried this place. I had take out and it was absolutely fantastic. The spices were toned down from how I eat Thai but the flavor and the ingredients were to die for. When I go back I will have it spiced up for my liking. I can’t say enough about my first experience. My wife is feeling the same. I will be back very soon. If your wondering how the other Thai places on Center street West Roxbury are compared(Phu Ket) and (Thai Spice) don’t waste your time. Plus all the dishes are priced very reasonably. I’d be nervous if I was a Thai restaurant near this one. I’m sure a women named Janet F will put this place down with every dish. Don’t believe a thing she says. She...
