chanced to have an hour open for sit-down breakfast and Mike's is on my hit list, so Mike's we went. i'd give them the decor, reminiscent of the old ...60-70s-ish look, which i appreciate. service was ok. efficient, polite, but somewhat..."distant", if i may. food... well, it's a diner. looks like they have a wide array of choices for breakfast and lunch options. i'd usually go with a corned beef hash w/eggs type of dish, but the coffeeless morning brain thought to cut down on potato and decided hurriedly on the corned beef omelette instead. likely user error, but was rather surprised to find mere slices of corned beef (and cheese) tucked inside a thick, folded up egg. don't get me wrong, it was not a bad dish; just hoped that i could turn back time and thought better of ordering this dish, which costs $13-14. the omelette was ok by itself, but i wonder what "farm fresh" really means, as listed on their menu. as for the home fries... a bit mushier than my liking, but i understand some prefer this way. $2.75 for refillable brewed coffee is definitely "south end" price tag -- Starbucks charges less. so my "typical diner" breakfast came out to be $20 including tax and tip, vs. my smart friend's $8.95 weekday special (3 eggs + meat + home fries + toast) which includes coffee. saving grace is that portion size (maybe in combination of my smaller stomach) -- i was able to save half of my dish for another day's breakfast, sans coffee. street parking: metered (usually filled up on Washington) + tiny amount of 2-hr/visitors . CASH ONLY.

Local diner featured on Triple D. It’s a bit out of the way from touristy spots, so you know that it really is a local gem. Came here around noon and the line was long, but somehow we only waited for about 15 minutes. The staff will put your name down on a list along with your party size. Indoor dining only. Credit cards are now accepted. There’s one single occupant restroom by the kitchen. It’s a kid-friendly spot. Portions are huge, so you may considering sharing. The food was delicious. The clam chowder was probably the best I’ve ever eaten in Boston, as there was some sort of thyme/rosemary hint in the soup that added some extra nuance. We got the corned beef hash with our eggs over easy, home fries, and rye toast (pre-buttered). We also got the fried chicken dinner which came with your choice of two sides - we got green beans and fries. The fries were golden and the chicken was super crispy. Service was nice but on the slow side. Overall, a good casual spot when you’re feeling hungry and are wanting some comfort diner food.

Classic American diner with some upscale menu options (Duck confit hash) near Massachusetts Ave on Washington St. A popular local favorite and its easy to see why with the friendly staff and great food with generous portions and a welcome change to many of the dining options in the South End. I had the Reuben with onion rings, pickle, and some coffee. The Reuben is served on perfectly grilled dark Rye bread that has a nice crisp to it but isn't hard. The real star of this sandwich though is the corned beef which it is loaded with. It is lighter on the kraut than I would have preferred, but that is personal taste. The onion rings were crispy (again without being hard) and were piled high. The pickle is more of a brined cucumber and that cucumber flavor really comes through. The coffee was robust in flavor compared to many you find in dining establishments. Total bill was $25 (minus tip). Overall, a great place for breakfast or lunch and I'll definitely be back!

If I could give this place zero stars I absolutely would! Although I’ve heard a lot of great things about this place, they are not versed AT ALL on food allergies despite the note on the bottom of the menu stating otherwise. I called this afternoon to get additional information because of the allergies I have. I specifically asked for a manager and was told that she was busy and unable to help me at that moment. So I was then handed off to an EXTREMELY RUDE waitress named Julie. Whom after I shared about my allergies, knew basically no information and essentially said that it’s better if I don’t dine there and had not one clue about cross contamination or any idea of how alterations to dishes can be made. Since waiters are not as thoroughly versed on food, ingredients, and kitchen cross contamination, I always ask for a manger since they are able to answer my questions adequately. While trying to explain this to Julie, she continued to cut me off, be rude and then hang up on me. She was a DISGRACE of a waitress and I truly hope she gets better training on how to appropriately speak and act with customers. Additionally, if the chef is unable to speak English as Julie so rudely shared, then quite frankly this establishment should take off their acknowledgment of allergies because it doesn’t seem like they can be very accommodating. If you have allergies, you’re better off avoiding this place because they are not knowledgeable at all about them and you’ll most likely end up having an allergic reaction. I would highly recommend these places that have delicious food and are extremely knowledgeable and accommodating: Five Horses Tavern, The Friendly Toast, and North...

Atrocious First Experience at Mike's City Diner.

Dear Readers: On Saturday December 22, 2012 at 2:00 PM, we visited Mike’s City Diner for the first time. Unfortunately, this was the worst Restaurant experience in U.S.A. We'll be specific.

Prior to our visit, we logged on to Mike’s City Diner website and selected 3 items from the "Dinner" menu. We then showed-up to Mike’s City Diner. Our experience deteriorated from the start. Female Hostess serving our table was very gloomy, rude and unfriendly.

We planned to order 3 items from the "Dinner" menu posted on the website. But, the Hostess told us that we could only order from the "Breakfast" menu. "Breakfast" at 2:00 PM? Unfortunately, we were greatly disappointed by the limited options. Suddenly, the impatient Hostess sniped: "I've got many customers here. Just order something!" We quickly picked "Homemade Hash & Egg" with side-order of Pancakes.

The order arrived. Here's what we received:

Hash was over-fried / burnt and cold. Turkey meat was cold and tasted flat. Pancakes were cold. A few hours later, we had stomachache.

Prior to departing the Diner, we informed the Female Manager about our negative experience. But, the woman only said "Sorry" and left.

Over the past 3 months, we made several calls and sent multiple emails to the Mike's City Diner Owner, Mr. Hajj. But to this day, Mr. Hajj has refused to do anything about this. We will never return to...
