Time Out has such a cool vibe, but most of the food available is pretty terrible. Union Square Donuts is no exception--these things taste like lightly sugared winter blankets. The texture's weird, there's too much yeast in the dough, they're stale, the toppings and flavors are a case of "let's do lots of gimmicks so nobody notices the actual pastry tastes like freshly dried socks". I love donuts and these look great, but I'm always disappointed.
I've tried a couple of locations and not only are they overpriced, they taste nasty. Pass!
Edi: Note their response assuming I'm not familiar with what brioche donuts should taste like(spoiler alert: not like this!), doubling down on the freshness of their non-fresh donuts that the person who wrote this was not there to experience, and unsuccessfully attempting to out-snark my comparison of their terrible product to socks. I mean, y'all could just improve your recipes and do a freshness check at that location like a normal business that wants to succeed would, but instead you've chosen aggressive mediocrity. Well done! I'm sure you'll sell a milion more donuts, just not to me, and hopefully not to anybody who reads this review, which I just took a...
Read moreWe tried two flavors as part of a Boston underground donut tour. So they were brought to a table, my tour guide in pieces ready for us to share. We tried the brown butter cruller and a hibiscus glazed yeast doughnut. I thought both were excellent. The cruller was awesome that morning when it was fresh, but I took some leftover samples home and I could definitely tell by the end of the day It was dry and didn't taste as good. The cherry and hibiscus glazed doughnut fared better throughout the day. we had an excellent experience and the donuts were very fresh and tasty. The unique flavors are an awesome novelty to try. I like the atmosphere of the food court and it has a clean restroom available as well, with a reasonable...
Read moreMeh... kind of the opposite but equally as bad as DD. These doughnuts are incredibly heavy, to the point that half a donut makes me feel sick. They're not very appetizing. I'd compare them to a breadstick. They're "brioche" doughnuts but they're almost like several brioche buns squeezed together - incredibly bready. I love doughnuts on my cheat days, but this was such a waste. I lost my appetite for most of the day due to the heaviness, so it was counterproductive. The dough (for every flavor) also seems to have some kind of spices in it, like ginger, which is very off-putting... either that or very...
