Several vegetarian options on the buffet; buffet surpasses dinner in quality/flavor. I've been here three times, for two lunch buffets and one dinner. The first time (buffet on a weekday, at about 12:15pm), the food was warm enough (not hot but pleasantly warm), flavorful (I had saag paneer, sweet potato masala, mixed vegetables, dal, and a samosa), and the naan was excellent (freshly made and brought to the table, lightly tasting of ghee and not too oily). The service was friendly and attentive but not too much so. This visit merited a strong 4 stars. On the second visit (dinner, buffet not offered), the server was inexperienced (didn't ask if we wanted appetizers or dessert), my vegetable korma's sauce was thin/bland, the vegetables weren't cooked (they were very crunchy), the spice level I had requested (medium) wasn't correct - it was too mild. Conversely my husband's aloo gobi masala was too spicy (he also requested medium) but his vegetables were well-cooked. Our non-vegetarian friends were generally satisfied with their meal (meat combination thali) and its price ($20 for a generous serving) but they were not highly impressed. The dinner visit earned only 2 stars. On the third visit (Sunday lunch buffet, arriving at about noon), the flavors were very good but the food wasn't warm enough and the naan was too oily/moist. The service was excellent again - friendly and attentive. 3 stars overall. Kathmandu II is still fairly new to Boulder and I hope that over time they iron out the wrinkles in their cooking/buffet quality. I know that the Nederland location is well-loved. Overall, I wouldn't mind visiting again for the lunch buffet if someone in my group really wanted a buffet, but I would always choose the nearby Tiffins for...
Read moreI don't normally write reviews, but perhaps I should write more of them. Let me begin by saying I was simply blown away by the level of service at this establishment. I walked in at 5 PM for the Dinner Buffet, expecting something along the lines of every single buffet experience I've ever had. I walked in and was greeted with fresh, "home-made" food. It's not a skimpy buffet at all, and has something for everyone, from vegetarian to pescetarian to vegan. I filled my plate with tandoori chicken, basmati rice, and a very spicy chicken that I cannot recall the name of at this moment. Man, this food is really good! To add to that, I was offered a chai tea by another woman who stopped by my table, and that paired quite well with the spiciness of what was on my plate. I went back one more time and tried some of the curry and dumplings, along with carrot pudding. It tasted like a happy marriage of apple cobbler and carrots, quite delicious when it was served warm on a chilly Fall afternoon like today. During the half hour at my table, I watched families walk in and rave about this place to eachother, "The naan bread is my favorite, it's great for dipping!" Something about this place just screams community, love, and gathering, like going to church, or spending time on a holiday, sitting near a warm fireplace and watching the snow fall outside. This restaurant is a wonderfully unique experience, and at the end of the day, it was only $10.89. I'll definitely be back, and I urge you to put this restaurant on your list of places to go...
Read moreThe food here is fantastic and the ambience is solid, backed by attentive and excellent service.
I'm personally a fan of Chicken Tikka Masala and they have an excellent version of it always available on their buffet. The buffet is stacked with options, probably 16-18 different foods to choose from. The Samosa is well seasoned and the breading crisp and crumbly, yet somehow moist. Their naan is good, but not great. It's just a bit thin, but with good flavor, so it's not like I take a pass on it. Their mango custard has good flavor and where they really win is their kheer (rice pudding). It's fantastic.
I'd recommend getting the chai when they offer it. It's hot and delicious and goes with basically anything on the menu. It's free refills so go to town on that.
I can get a buffet, a chai, and pay a tip for about $16 at lunch. The bill is always brought as a single check to the table and then they'll split it however you want at the front. They are around to the table frequently and keep beverages to the brim if you tell them you'd like the refill.
This is my favorite place in Denver/Boulder for Indian food. It's well worth a stop.
One note, you have to really watch out for their parking lot entrance. You can only get to it on the northbound side of the street and it comes up and goes by pretty fast. There's a big Kathmandu II sign though, so as long as you're looking for it, you...
