We live nearby and have eaten here a lot over the years... I would count over a hundred times, easily. The entrees I've tried (esp.: blueberry pancakes, tempeh skillet) are very tasty. I'm vegan and my girlfriend likes many of the eggs-based options. Indoor, outdoor, and bar seating options are to be had. The wait is typically reasonable or none at all. We've tried many of the drink options, some tasty and some incredibly sugary... all very overpriced, imo.
Last week, I ordered a "small side of potatoes" to go along with my entree and was charged close to $6 for a heaping plate of breakfast potatoes, which I felt was wasteful as a side dish and also just not that healthy (carbs) to eat so much of them, imo.
So, today, I asked again for a "small side of potatoes" and explained last week's issue... the waitress kindly assured me she could get me a half- side of potatoes w/ my meal, but then came back and said "I'm sorry, my manager won't allow me to do it... we can put less potatoes on the plate, but we'll charge you the same price".
That's absurd, so I declined-- they could easily charge $3 for a half-portion of potatoes. It is a SIDE, not an entree. Anyway. Some of the other sides are a bit absurd as well, such as $2.95 for half of an avocado... I've never seen a $6 avocado before, seems about a 500% mark-up... so just bring your own avocado.
Overall, decent place w/ vegan options and friendly staff and an "old Boulder" feel (oh, I miss old Boulder)... but an issue such as the recent example above w/ side dish could be easily rectified with just some flexibility and care for the customer. Also, I wish they could install an air curtain, the flies are repeatedly aggressive here indoors and do really detract from...
Read moreFortunately I went to the South side walnut cafe 1st. We visited there 1st 2 times & we had breakfast there as a family! Unfortunately I came here with my family expecting the same experience I ordered the vegan breakfast option which they charged me more for Then everybody else, and only gave me half a plate with egg shells in it? They forgot to bring out my hash Browns that I ordered with it? Maybe this was a reason for only a 1/2 to 1/3 of a plate full! My wife ordered an extra plant based sausage and my son had ordered you've ordered a plant based sausage as well. My son's plant based sausage was OK my wife's was a totally different product and its absolutely disgusting and we had to pay almost $10 for it! As a business owner it's kind of disturbing to see 2 places ran completely differently. I would just suggest that you go to the southside walnut cafe you will love the customer service which was better and the food portions are what you expect for breakfast at the price you have to pay . Personally I have a problem when plant based stuff is so much better for our environment and then you charge me more you've darged me more and you don't even put vegetables in it? Unless you're talking about the onions that seemed like hash Browns threw out the meal! My other 3 kids that ordered non plant based food seem to enjoy their meal. As a plant based person that cares about our environment I definitely will not visit this...
Read moreWent for lunch on my Dad's 87th B'day. Dad had soup and sandwich (tuna sandwich and something called Hungarian? mushroom soup...whatever), Mom had Teriyaki chicken sandwich with pineapple slice, and I had something called a Hot Mediterranean sandwich. I had heard they had good breakfasts so thought we'd try it. Nice little cafe and for some reason a decent crowd. I'm absolutely amazed at how many good reviews there are here... so who knows maybe the breakfasts ARE good? What we had was almost OK at best, especially considering the prices. Tuna was brown and stringy and the soup wasn't as good as what you can get in a can. The chicken sandwich, supposedly teriyaki was flavorless except for the pineapple and fell apart on the plate. Mom ended up eating it with a fork. The Mediterranean sandwich was sort of like really mediocre pizza built on soft mushy bread - it was supposed to be a French bread? I suppose somewhere in France they make bread something like this... then again probably not? Sandwiches were served with what appeared to be store brand ruffled potato chips or sliced brown apple (your choice) and a pickle spear. We all drank water and the bill was about $32 w/tip. For lunch you're way better off going to Wendy's or maybe Quizno's instead. The food's much better and you can save about 1/3 of the price. Service was good and our...
