My experience at Village Coffee Shop left a lot to be desired for.
I pass by this cute place every morning on my way to school, and it always is packed with happy looking customers. I thought it would be a great place to try for breakfast and was sad that my experience was so bad.
We came to the restaurant around 8:30 on a Saturday morning so we expected it to be busy; we eventually got a table (You kind of have to fight for tables as there isn’t anyone sitting people, not a complaint just a minor annoyance when someone snags a table you were waiting on.) and looked through the menu. There didn't seem to be much variety of pancakes, buttermilk and one other plus the special for today. That was really all I saw so decided to go for a stack of buttermilk pancakes. We waited probably 15 minutes until our server decided to come over and take our order. I got a class of Orange juice, and my companion a cup of tea. The only tea offered was Green, White or Black. We saw they had Celestial tea of various flavors but those weren’t offered to us. Instead she brought back a half full cup of hot water and a Cosco generic brand of plain Green Tea. After that we never even could catch her long enough to ask for anything else. Now, the pancakes are HUGE. A stack is more than probably anyone can eat in one sitting. I was very enthused when our breakfast arrived. Completely ready to tear into my cakes, but upon the first bite I realized they had burned my pancakes or something got mixed into the batter because mine were not very appetizing. My companion got the special of the day and said they were good, so maybe they just burned them or something like that.
My real complaint is the quality of the service. It was just lacking completely. I realize the place was busy, but there are other breakfast places with the same volume (Tangerine and Snooze to name two) that don't have this customer service problem. Our service never said anything to us other than when she asked what we wanted. She frequently blew by our table and never had a smile on her face even once.
Probably won’t be returning, it might be hit or miss with this...

While the coffee was average, it certainly did not detract from the overall experience. It complemented the meal well and was served piping hot. Though not exceptional, it was still a decent cup of joe to start the day.

Read moreI very rarely write a review... I have been in Boulder as long as this place has been there (47 + )... The staff has destroyed this place... Created by a rude receptions, seated at the counter, which was dirty. Instead of cleaning it up herself, she called a bus guy, that took his time getting to the counter. The job to wipe the counter was beneath him, and did not look while he was wiping down the counter. When I should him places he missed there was no apology. The reception then asked me if I wanted coffee, many mins later after she talked to staff, and fussed around I finally got it.
Been my to go place whenever I wanted decent hash browns. The food is average and you get a generous portion. It is not a high class place and I do not go there for that, I go for the typical home cooking dinner.
The order was wrong and I was given toast, without asking me for what type.
I and finished my meal was finishing my coffee when I was "you need to leave because we have 3 people that want to sit at the counter" . You walk in you are told that single people should sit at the counter... SO I WAS TOLD TO LEAVE. I was not there "wasting time " over coffe.
I went to pay the bill and it was not itemized, tax and everything thrown together. When I asked the cashier got upset, and it was not itemized again, but the price had gone down, and tax the items were not broken down. You only get the "item with tax" included, calculated in their head (I have advanced degrees in Computer Science, and I do not believe the "kid" can do this in his head. Sure enough when I used the calculator after I left, the values where wrong. Note no prices for food are shown on the web site) ...
Finally, I was asked if I "wanted to tip" when I paid the bill... I said I was forced to without out finishing me coffee... No apologies from the cashier, no referral to a manager, just a shrug of the shoulders.
I have alway liked this place but now the help has...
