A standout dining experience in downtown Brownsville. Many tables were available when I visited, but a reservation would be a good idea. When we were seated, we were formally greeted by the owner and waiter who explained the concept of the restaurant and gave some recommendations on drinks and food.
Unlike the usual starters of bread or chips and salsa, we were served a pita style flatbread with goat cheese and a peanut sauce, which was unique and savory. The cocktail I ordered was the Piña Brew, which was a take on a piña colada, but with cold brew coffee. I was skeptical as I was intrigued, but the coconut and pineapple flavors play nicely with the coffee. The Shrimp aguachile appetizer was very refreshing and flavorful, and presented very nicely. For my main course, I had the Baja Fish Tacos, which were unexpectedly unique and creative. The apple and jicama slaw was made with a mild curry sauce that elevated the tacos to something you won’t find anywhere else. The Sticky Toffee Pudding dessert was made with a date based cake, which was chewy on the edges and moist inside, and the house made whipped cream and whiskey caramel sauce were fantastic additions.
Our server Ozzy was incredibly helpful throughout the night and provided a concierge level of service not found at many other places. The owner came to talk with us after our meal about the brief history of the restaurant and his concept for a dining experience that combines great quality and inventive dishes with the high end service and hospitality you could expect from a high end hotel.

Read moreWhat an exceptional dining experience at Monarca! From the moment you step in, the jungle ambience envelops you in a vibrant atmosphere that feels both exotic and welcoming. The decor is beautifully done, capturing the essence of inspired nature, which adds an extra layer to the delightful culinary journey.
The menu is an ode to local flavors, and every dish I tried was a testament to the chef’s dedication to freshness and authenticity. The Mexican fish tacos were a highlight—perfectly seasoned and bursting with flavor. The octopus ceviche was impeccably fresh, showcasing the sea's bounty in every bite. The fresh Gulf oysters were a real treat, succulent and briny, ideal for seafood lovers.
I also had the unique experience of trying grasshoppers for the first time—crispy, crunchy, and surprisingly delightful! The New York strip steak pastry was good to perfection and the table side blow torched butter topped it off.
We celebrated with a birthday with a cake that was not only beautifully presented but was a phenomenal combination of textures and tastes. And the full bar offered a great selection of beverages to pair perfectly with our meals.
Overall, Monarca is a must-visit for anyone looking to indulge in authentic Mexican cuisine with a lush, jungle-inspired setting. Can't wait...
Read moreReal nice decor & great vibe. We felt welcomed as soon as we walked in. The Manager Joe Vega and a server named Abraham gave us a vip welcome and a complimentary glass of wine and a beer while we waited for our friends to arrive in the comfortable waiting area. Once at our table we ordered appetizers which included their delicious monarca ceviche & popcorn shrimp. The restaurant also brought out some complimentary out of this world creamy crab soup & some melted goat cheese topped with a tomato sauce, served with flat bread that was also very good. For our main course we had the spicy octopus, shrimp quesabirria tacos and a grasshopper tostada. Everything was cooked perfectly! Several flavors were tingling in my mouth opening up my taste buds. All the food was very good. I highly recommend this place for a great culinary experience. 5 stars all the way around. The service was also excellent by our waitress Andrea. What a great addition to our city. Congratulations to the owners &...
