During our visit to Calistoga, we were in search of food options that catered to my gluten and dairy sensitivity. On a Tuesday, we stumbled upon Soo Yuan restaurant, which displayed multiple signs indicating "gluten-free options available." However, to our disappointment, the restaurant was closed that day. Undeterred, we returned the following day, Wednesday, and were promptly seated by a courteous server who was attentive to our inquiries.
I opted for the house special fried rice, a delightful combination of BBQ pork, shrimp, chicken, and various meats. While the taste was satisfactory, I felt it could have been seasoned a tad more. Additionally, I ordered the salt and pepper chicken wings, making sure to confirm their gluten-free status with the server. After checking with the chef, she informed me that they were not GF due to the batter but that they could make them GF for me. When the wings came out, I could immediately see that they were battered. I am grateful that I double-checked, as the wings were taken back to the kitchen, and the chef kindly prepared a gluten-free version without the batter. The chicken wings turned out to be hot, juicy, and flavorful.
Despite the initial mishap with the battered wings, my overall experience at Soo Yuan was positive. The restaurant staff was accommodating, and the quality of the food, aside from the minor seasoning adjustment, met my...
Read moreIt was a Monday evening @5pm, so maybe that's why I had a horrible experience... If you see that as a flimsy excuse, then feel free to keep reading. I ordered Take Out - Sweet & Sour Pork (Burnt and painfully crunchy even after drowning a couple pieces in the tiny amount of sauce they gave us) Beef Chow Mein (A soggy mushy mess, that felt like trying to chew watery dough) Hot & Sour Soup (No flavor, might as well have been broth) and Pan Fried Dumplings (Same doughy mess, but with a little more flavor) All of which came to a little over $40.00 after the tip, which felt like a mistake after tasting what they gave us. Both of the people I dealt with at the counter seemed quite irritable, and VERY dismissive of me no matter how pleasant I tried to be with them. I spent years in Asia, and I absolutely love Chinese food. Both authentic from Hong Kong, and state side restaurants too. But I have never tasted anything this bad, and the service was worse than a TacoBell at a mall food court. I'm all for second chances and giving the benefit of the doubt... But I don't think I'll ever go back to this place. Soo Yuan is not on par with the level of service and food you would expect from an upscale wine country...
Read moreGreeted at the door by friendly staff wearing a mask, I decided to dine in. I ordered a curry chicken dinner with a couple cans of diet Coke. Gotta make an effort somewhere, right?
Small but clean restroom was stocked well and has an air dryer to eliminate waste. Returned to my seat and food came shortly thereafter.
I posted a photo of the curry chicken. It was tasty, and not overpoweringly spicy so ask for spicy if that's how you prefer it. Mine was just the way I like it.
A couple came in to get a Togo order and I recommended the curry chicken and they got an order of that and something else, so yes I would and already DID recommend it.
I live in Florida but if I ever get up here again I would definitely eat here again. Thanks for the tasty meal and fond...
