Food: I got thier mexican bowl, which they had many options to make this customable. The portions was okay, I think for $20 it's price rather on the higher end. I got the carne asada which I think they add way too much pepper seasoning but meat was tender. I also got the Al paster and that was also tender, much better seasonsed with a hint of sweetness. However, you can add however many toppings with no charge it seems like so that's a plus. Service: It's rather quick with providing the similar set up to any chipotle, or mexican bowl maker food assortment. Very easy to see the options and pick on what you like, and they tend to keep the stations clean. Ambiance: There's two floors so there's plenty to sit and they have a huge wall of hot sauces that you can pick from. It feels like your local mexican spot stopping by as a college student. Location accommodation: It's right in harvard sq and so parking can be hard to find on the side. Also, it closes much later like at 3am so it's nice to hit the spot if you're looking for food after a night out.

Always a reliable spot for satisfying Mexican bowls. Whenever I’m craving for a Mexican bowl, I always go to El Jefe’s. This place has become my late-night haven, and for good reasons. Let's talk portions: they're generous. A pro tip is to order in-store because the staff tend to be more liberal with the serving sizes compared to what you might get from online orders. Another huge bonus is the no-extra-charge policy on all toppings, including the often-premium guacamole. From their protein options, my favorite is undoubtedly the Carne Molida Picante. This spicy ground beef packs a flavorful punch and elevates the entire bowl. It's not just spicy for the sake of being spicy; it's complex and aromatic, making every bite delightful. Their chips with toppings are another popular choice, although be warned—it can get messy. While the ambiance may not be as laid-back as its rival, Felipe's, located just across the street, El Jefe’s offers a satisfying experience that stands head and shoulders above the competition if your focus is solely on the food.

I used to love this place, but a lot has changed over the last year. The portions have gotten a lot smaller. They’ve increased the price on the food and more times than often when I go there they run out of the meats that I like then they try to convince you oh we have all these other meats. Why am I gonna take a chance on spending $12 on a burrito with a meat that I’m not probably not gonna like and end up throwing away it’s literally 3 o’clock in the morning right they close at four. There’s no reason or excuse why they shouldn’t have any chicken or chorizo Ready so a lot of times they will run out of something and they would be and they will refuse to make more or they won’t make more so they don’t care much about servicing the customers cause it’s not like they ran out of chicken. It’s just they don’t wanna cook anymore chicken for the night. How convenient is that? I promise you I’m gonna start going to Felipe’s, which is right across the street from them.

Absolutely loved my experience at El Jefe's Taqueria in Harvard Square! From the moment I walked in, the vibrant atmosphere and welcoming staff made me feel right at home. Here are six highlights from my visit:

Authentic Flavors: The food at El Jefe's truly transports you with its authenticity. Each dish is a burst of flavor, reflecting the rich culinary traditions of Mexico. Whether it's their tacos, burritos, or quesadillas, everything tastes like it's made with heart and soul.

Quality Ingredients: It's evident that El Jefe's prioritizes freshness and quality in their ingredients. Everything from the meat to the vegetables tasted fresh and was cooked perfectly, enhancing the overall flavor of the dishes.

Generous Portions: The servings are generous, ensuring you get great value for your money. You leave satisfied without feeling like you've overeaten, which is always a plus in my book.

Welcoming Atmosphere: The ambiance at El Jefe's is just what you'd hope for in a Mexican eatery – vibrant, lively, and inviting. It's a great place for both quick bites and leisurely meals with friends or family.

Efficient Service: Despite how busy they get, especially during peak hours, the staff at El Jefe's manages to be attentive and efficient. Our orders were taken promptly, and the food arrived quicker than expected, all without compromising on quality.

Value for Money: Considering the quality of the food, the portion sizes, and the overall dining experience, El Jefe's offers excellent value for money. It's a great spot for anyone looking to enjoy authentic Mexican cuisine without breaking the bank.

El Jefe's Taqueria in Harvard Square is a must-visit for anyone craving authentic, delicious Mexican food in a friendly and vibrant setting....

I had a hard time communicating with the staffs there. None of them speaks English. Seem to only understand one-word ingredients, any further instruction/ask is hit or miss. Service attitude was bad, even for a cheap burrito place.

I forgot to ask for sauce while ordering my burrito bowl. I realized that 2 seconds after I paid, so I asked the staff to add the sauce and pointed to the sauce bottle. For some reason, he thought I was demanding something extra, and said “this, extra charge.” So I explained that I just forgot to add the sauce, but he didn’t seem to understand and kept saying extra charge with more aggression. He even signaled with his hands that my order was complete, and if I want something else - even the sauce, I had to pay extra (I don’t know what he’s saying exactly he has heavy accent, but that’s my best guess). So at that point, I felt this wasn't just a language thing, he’s being ridiculous and mean. I know it's just sauce, most people would probably leave if this happens, but I refused to give in to something this stupid.

So I went to another staff, who also doesn’t know English well. But he was finally able to understand I forgot the sauce while ordering and added it to my bowl.

Just a disappointing experience, I wasn’t asking anything complicated. This is such a hustle for something really basic. Food is all right, mediocre at best, doesn't live up to some of the other reviews, but it's cheap...

i loved this place the first few times i went. the service has been questionable sporadically but the food always hits. but this time, when i asked for a fajita bowl, i was given a regular bowl (one of the workers told me i had to pay extra for protein, when i’m aware the fajita bowl has 3 proteins). when i asked him about this he allowed me to add in 2 proteins in total. but when i got to the counter, i was asked to pay the price of a fajita bowl. when i asked why i was paying for the price of a fajita bowl when i was only allowed to add 2 proteins and whether it would be possible to add a third protein if i’m paying the cost of a fajita bowl, the lady at the counter said they can’t do that and threw the made bowl into the trash. i thought she’d just add an additional protein to the bowl, if i had understood that she was going to throw away the bowl i would have just taken it or discussed further since that’s wasteful.

they then started a new bowl but put in way smaller portions of everything. i understand there were some miscommunications on both ends but i don’t understand why you couldn’t have either added a third protein to the first bowl or had me pay for a regular bowl with a second protein pay added to it. service was terrible, wasted bowl, and i felt genuinely disrespected. the food is great, but please take care of how you approach issues and communicate with customers, it’s...
