I love the artsy, colorful, bohemian, and bright atmosphere. The staff were friendly enough, and professional, but they could have used at least one more front of the house person to attend to everyone's needs; the table visits were too few and far apart.
Now for the ehh part.
Our first impression was muddied by a sign on the front door that says there is a $20 minimum per person for lunch, due to the organic food they use. But, then they explained inside that it is actually to divert the people who just want to eat chips and salsa from coming there. I get it, there are limited tables and you don't want someone camping on a $7 dollar tab. But, good lord at least have good food for that kind of desperation. The sign is a total turn off, even to us customers who can happily afford to eat there. It just made the whole experience feel so cheap and desperate when we were hoping for nice and quality. The nice part was there, the quality...not so much.
If the food is good then you don't have to defend its cost or explain that it is organic on the door to justify a minimum charge. Just serve good organic food and charge what you think it is worth. As it is, it definitely wasn't worth $60+ the two of us spent for lunch.
I have to say the actual chips were great; perfect crunch, size, shape, taste, warm and not to oily. The "salsa", on the other hand, was terrible. My dad (an authentic Mexican food consœur...that passed on to me) always said, "you know if a Mexican resturant is good by its salsa", which was more like a sauce in litte ramekins that forced us to be extra conservative on dipping. The hot was ok, but it only offered heat and nothing else, and the milder green one had too way too much char flavor to even be palatable. It wasn't enjoyable. So, if people are just eating your chips and salsa...more power to them. And, I can see why they would leave after just having them.
The only good thing I can say about the food, was that it was plated nice. But, upscale doesn't just mean pretty, expensive, and organic products (which how cheap the owners are I can only imagine that they aren't actually buying organic) it has to be prepared and flavored well, and in a way that creates a memorable experince. It should make your eyes roll up in the back of your head and make you do the happy butt-wiggle dance with every bite, that didnt happen at all durring our meal.
My brother liked his shredded beef burrito with green sauce, but he used to eat dirt, and gum from under the bleachers, so I can't really trust his pallet.
I had the veggie burrito with both the red and green sauce. The green sauce was slightly better than the red, which tasted like the canned red enchilada sauce you get in the health food section of a store...you know the kind. But, I needed the sauce because the burrito would have been too dry otherwise. I dont know why, when some restaurants serve vegetarian options, they think we just like raw vegetables in leu of flavor and texture.
We are vegetarians, not farm animals. If I wanted a salad, I would have ordered a salad. Instead, I ordered a burrito thinking a $20 burrito was going to knock my socks off. But, I got a tortilla wrapped around large pieces of crunchy, barely cooked broccoli and other veggies, a spoonful of rice and beans, covered in what people think healthy food should taste like; bland and raw.
It's a shame because all the components were there to have a completely enjoyable meal, they just failed completely in the execution.
At the end of the meal, we were also met with an additional alcohol tax despite having not ordered any alcohol. They explained that it is a new city tax on all resturants and applied whether you buy alcohol or not. I should have never had to ask, and the severs never should have had to explain it at the end of the meal, especially having been a brand new tax. Now, that is the sign you should have had on the door, so as not to leave your customers annoyed at the end of their already...
Read moreMi Corazon has my heart…what a scrumptious, delightful, delicious and decadent array of food! First, they make everything fresh- from scratch!! This is HUGE because most restaurants in Oregon serve pre-packaged and pre- made food. I am allergic to onions and all the Mexican restaurants besides this one put onions in everything and tell you “it’s already made”- not Mi Corazon! Our server (who was soft spoken, patient, and easygoing)- said “ I can make you anything you want with no onions- pico, guacamole, salsa- everything is made from scratch.” The only problem is deciding WHAT to eat! We started with chips and salsa- and yes, I’m a teacher so I hesitated because of the price but these were the BEST CHIPS AND SALSA I have ever eaten with freshly made chips and two completely different and savory salsas… I have eaten enough chips and salsa in my lifetime to circle the globe many times! I grew up in the Southwest(Az) and lived 10 years in NewMexico close to the home of Hatch green chiles. Their chips and salsa are worth the splurge. At Mi Corazon, the choices are amazing and each one more mouth watering than the next. I got something with a name I had never heard of which resembled a mini, non- greasy Navajo base with grilled locally spiced veggies and cilantro sauce which was flavorful, smoky and delicious. But the most delicious thing on my plate surprisingly was my salad- and I am not someone who extols them virtues of salad but the lettuce was fresh and…may I say artistically presented and plated? But the salad dressing was to die for! Absolutely delicious. It is not an exaggeration to say I wanted to lick the plate. My 16 year old son got the empanadas which were also absolutely delicious and he also could not believe how every bite of food we took was out of this world. I am going back for my birthday even though it’s an hours drive because I moved to Oregon a year ago and this is the first place that I have eaten that has food served with true skill, pride and love. The decor is also a breath of fresh air and you will fall in love with the blown glass light fixtures and rich wood dining tables. As we left the restaurant I told my son, “ If I died right now, I would die a happy woman.” No lie. It’s that remarkable. A jewel on the coast. 5 Stars All The Way and worth every penny. Fresh, local,...
Read moreI have to say, with no reservation, that we were terribly underwhelmed and disappointed with our meal today. I will preface with the fact that we did order as take-out, but we took it directly home 3 minutes away and plated it on proper plates. Overall my limited positive observations are that the ingredients were very fresh, vegetables were properly al dente, the carne asada steak we ordered medium was spot on medium, and the ceviche appetizer may be one of the favorites I have ever had. Unfortunately, across our family of 4 we had 4 entrees and we were disappointed with all of them. The seafood soup was minuscule and bland; the pesce de mare from other Mexican restaurants in the region are 3 time bigger and a third the price and overall more enjoyable. The carne asada did not taste marinated and was chewy. The avocado and crab entree was fresh, with the avocado a good level of ripeness, but somehow we found it bland and not special. We are not people that salt or over spice our food, we know how to enjoy natural ingredients. The last entree was fajitas; the 5 shrimp were standard, the onions and peppers were only lightly cooked, and overall the food was bland… without question the fajitas were the least enjoyable we have every had, at any price. Why these are 35 dollars I have no idea. In summary, we ordered from Mi Corazon as a special meal to mark our last night of vacation in Cannon Beach. Our meal was almost $220, and will be memorable mostly for how overpriced and disappointing it was. We love to support local restaurants and businesses, and we appreciate artistry and fresh ingredients, but sadly to us this was boring and not good. The ceviche, the guacamole, and the churros dessert were excellent, but let’s face it, those are good at 1/2 the price at many other restaurants. I awarded 2 stars vice 1 due to the high quality of the ingredients and the fact that we ordered the meal to go and it was completed and ready for us in 20 minutes,...
