Steady State Roasting — Restaurant in Carlsbad

What can't be said about Steady State that doesn't end in wanting more of this place? They are a Specialty coffee roaster that is truly special: coffee, people, and service. All are excellent.

This is our 2nd visit; the 1st some time ago when we were fortunate to meet with the founder, Elliot, and experienced SS for the 1st time. Needless to say it was awesome hence or return visit.

Coffee: Specialty grade from ultra-premium importers (see below) and roasted apparently on the lighter side albeit well developed.

Equipment: All beans roasted in house on an Ambex. They utilize several brew methods dependent upon customer preference including pour overs via V60. Tops espresso being pulled – literally, as it is true lever style - on a BEAUTIFUL 2-group Astoria Rapallo.

Location: Hidden gem in Carlsbad; pass down the rock filled path that includes a painting from local artist TEKST, and you’ll arrive at their shop that is fully stocked and part of a co-op.

Final Note: Kyle, the barista here, was knowledgeable, helpful, and provided in depth information regarding the coffees origin, roast, brew method (this is what should be expected from a specialty coffee roaster). He went beyond that by offering excellent service that was courteous, attentive, and downright friendly.

Ordered Americano & first off there's only one size which equates to a small-med anywhere in AZ. So only 2 shots of espresso. I ordered one extra shot since I wanted a large coffee, which would have 4 shots in any good coffee shop. Even in this smallish-med cup the coffee was adequately strong but not as strong as expected. This set me back $5 AND they do not have heavy cream. Another cheap out. No 1/2 & 1/2 is not the same. Not even close. Even more of a downer is the Espresso has weird "tangy" flavor to the coffee. I don't like it. I tolerated it since I wasted $6 on it but won't be back for more.

Ambiance note: people like to take up residence inside and work on devices.

On the plus side, dogs are allowed & lots of them. I don't have one right now but dog-friendly places get an extra star more than they deserve otherwise.

Bathroom is clean & even has paper towels. A seeming anomaly in CA. Good parking lot.

Lots of outdoor seating the lawn chairs in lot are a fun touch & comfortable.

literally the most perfect coffee shop to exist. I’m a big coffee girl and have tried many other places in Carlsbad, San Marcos, Vista, Esco, EVERYWHERE. Nowhere has beat Steady State and I’ve been coming here for about 2 years now. I feel completely comfortable and welcome every time I come in and enjoy the demeanor of the staff. They’re confident in what they do because they’re great at what they do and they’ve never failed to put a smile on my face, give a compliment or learn something new from people who come in when they get the chance.

The environment is great, outdoor and indoor seating, great music and right next to the beach.

The best thing that you can get on their menu is the PSL (pancake syrup latte). It’s perfect, sweet but not too sweet and a little salty to balance everything out.
