I still have nightmares of my literally steaming hot sushi plates I was served.
Disclaimer: I'm from Chicago. I have eaten a lot of sushi from some of the highest end restaurants and hole in the wall buffet sushi places. Maybe this is something normal in Puerto Rico, but never ever in my life have I been served steaming hot or even just hot sushi before.
First things..
Crab Rangoon has literally no cream cheese. It is tiny wrappers with what basically seemed like an imitation crab stick inside.
Veggie tempura was not made with a tempura batter or anything like it. It was served with huge chunk of veggies (consisted of 3 huge chunks of celery, 2green pepper and 2 carrot slices.) They were BREADED with bread crumbs and fried. Celery was super gross.
Ordered 3 kinds of sushi. a. Avocado/Cream cheese. Rice was very warm, avocado was old and tasted bad. A favorite of mine usually, but I couldn't stomach it. Should have been served nice and cold. b. Some other sushi that was served in a round circle (all the slices huddled together) and was steaming hot when served. c. Some other sushi that in all fairness does say that it was deep fried...BUT , I have had other specialty rolls from different places that were fried and never came to my table so hot I couldn't eat it. At best it would be very slightly warm only. These were so hot, it burned my mouth.
Ordered a beef lo mein. That was mediocre at best, but edible, albeit cold when served.
And the craziest thing...EVERYTHING was served on Dixie paper plates. Again. Maybe its a thing in San juan, but we ate out all over the place over there and that was the only place that weirdly served on paper plates. Wasteful for the environment and definetly didnt make me feel like the $100 we spent on dinner was worth it.
Worst meal I have had in ages. I wanted to throw up thinking about the hot sushi while we walked to our hotel room. I was so nauseous, I couldn't wait to get out of there. Place was very small and cramped too. I am not easily grossed out and have a good stomach and open palate, but umm...NO...run away and find...
Read moreMy favorite restaurant near home. Dine in or carry out. When I don't feel like cooking I can always count on Kintaro's friendly staff and great menu. Really! So much deliciousness to choose from. Starting with appetizers; a few of my faves: Shumai (pan fried or steamed shrimp dumpling), Seafood Spring Roll, and egg rolls are yummy. My husband and I both enjoy the Shrimp Lo Mein. When it comes to Fried Rice , although each is good, we prefer the shrimp fried rice. Vegetable & Shrimp Tempura is great. My absolute favourite rolls are the Pink Dinosaur & the Happy Crunchy. Yes! I love anything with shrimp. Kintaro delivers and although they are not open until 5 pm, they DO stay open late. Lovely atmosphere.
Until 3am Mon - Thurs & Sunday! 5 pm - 4 am Fri & Sat. Steak, Seafood, Tempura, & Sushi.
*There's also a Kintaro in Condado that's equally good and a bit larger, with dining options inside or patio seating. Take your pick. You won't be disappointed. (Not certain about...
Read moreWe were there on vacation and happened to be staying across the street. After kayaking nearby, we came back to the area and and set out to find dinner. Unfortunately every place we tried along this street was full or closed because it was almost 9 pm. We passed Kintaro and saw empty tables so we took a chance. I dont think either of us expected to get such a great dinner. We tried some sushi, crab Rangoon, chicken satay and shrimp fried rice. All of the seafood was extremely fresh and the Rangoons were literally shucked crab meat in a wonton, Not crab flavored cream cheese :) the rice was light and perfectly cooked. No grease, no MSG in anything! We actually went back and got takeout a second day because we enjoyed it so much. I wish it was this good in the US. we hope to come back to Puerto Rico soon and Kintaro will absolutely be one...
