My first taste of their products was at Bond park when they had a stand at one of the festivals last year. Excellent initial experience. I visited the bakery yesterday and bought the Donawellen, Bee Sting, two savory turnovers, and a Black Forest cookie to take to my German friend. I could see how dry the Bee Sting was when he tried to eat it and I felt embarrassed. He said in their defense that the side pieces are drier and less sweet but as expensive as they are I wish they had given us a better piece. I tried it myself but it was too dry and I didn’t desire another bite. It was not the quality of what I remember enjoying at Bond park.
The savory turnover with bacon in it was overwhelmingly flavored of bacon bits as opposed to a more authentic bacon flavor. I only took one bite and can’t recommend it. (And I love bacon) The mushroom turnover was pleasing. Packed with chopped mushrooms.
The Donawellen was not as good as expected either. It was dry as well. The upper part was nice - the chocolate and cream - but the lower half was tough and I didn’t care for it. My friend said it was ok and proceeded to eat it. Again, though, I felt bad that it wasn’t amazing.
The cookie was soft and he overall liked it but we were both surprised it had a ginger flavor in it. I didn’t expect that from a Black Forest cookie.
For the prices - around $6 per item - I was disappointed in the products. I wanted to love this bakery since the primary person I care about grew up in Stuttgart. I’d hoped to have found a place to buy him specialties close to his heart. Maybe it was an off day. Maybe items that are drying out or less than their top quality could be separated and discounted. I would pay the expensive prices if the quality was excellent.
I have a couple of slices of cake on order from them already since it’s his favorite cake. Fingers crossed those...
Read moreMy wife and I delighted to finally see Annelore's German Bakery open in Cary. We've been watching it constructed and eagerly expecting it for over 3 years. We've frequent other great German bakeries such as the Guglhupf as well as other local bakeries. On two different occasions at Annelore's, we purchased a stollen, pfeffernüse, and two different tarts. We regret to say we cannot honestly recommend Annelore's as much as I want to see them succeed. All of the items purchased cost 2 or even 4 times as much as other bakeries that have better goods. A small stollen costs over $37. Expectations run high when paying that much. But the stollen was very dry, one of the worst we've had, and we've bought many. Major disappointment on a costly item. Ditto experience on the pfeffernüse, exceedingly dry and hard as rocks. The two different fruit tarts at $6 each were flavorless and dryish as well, quite run-of-the-mill. We seriously don't mind paying high prices if the quality merits. We'd like to return to Annelore's and hope they can get...

BEST OF EVERYTHING. LOVE THE PEOPLE AND EVERYTHING I HAVE BOUGHT EITHER AT THE STORE, DOWNTOWN CARY OR AT THE FARMER'S MARKET. BEST PEOPLE, BEST BAKERY!! IF YOU WANT THE BEST YOU WILL HAVE TO PAY MORE, IN FACT, I DON'T THINK THEY CHARGE ENOUGH. CARY, EVEN RALEIGH AREN'T "LARGE" CITIES, SO BE HAPPY YOU DON'T LIVE IN A LARGE CITY, WHERE THE PRICES WOULD BE TRIPLE!! REMEMBER THE BAKERY HAS TO PAY FOR THE BUILDING LOCATED IN CARY, PAY TAXES, IN DOWNTOWN CARY, PAY AN ELECTIC BILL, FOR ALL THOSE OVENS, PAY EMPLOYEES, BUY THE BEST INGREDIENTS, WHICH MAKES EVERYTHING TASTE BETTER THAN ANYTHING IN THE AREA. THEN ASK AGAIN, ARE THE PRICES TOO HIGH? NO!! LOOK AT MY OTHER REVIEWS AND YOU WILL KNOW I'M NOT ONE THAT BEATS AROUND THE BUSH, I AM HONEST ABOUT EVERYWHERE I GO, EVERYTHING I BUY AND THE PEOPLE THAT RUN...
