"So, I bring you ice cream, after the lovin'. With a pint I just bought, yesterday." - parody of "After the Lovin'", Engelbert Humperdinck.
Cash not accepted
I remember seeing Afters Ice Cream on a segment of the KTLA Morning News, promoting their sticky bun, perhaps over a decade ago. A donut with ice cream inside, I knew right away a sticky bun wouldn't be for me. Why? It would be cloyingly sweet for my taste. Shortly thereafter, a location opened up in Cerritos, after I believe their original location in Fountain Valley. Many moons later, Afters Ice Cream finally showed me what they're working with.
Customers are allowed to sample to their heart's content. Popular flavors include Cookie Monster, Vietnamese Coffee & Ube. After a few minutes of sampling, Jasmine Milk Tea stood out the most.
Jasmine Milk Tea- Slightly denser than soft serve, Afters' ice cream melts quickly! After a couple spoonfuls, the Jasmine Milk Tea was already melting. Being only a low 80's day in July, I can't imagine what the mess would be with taking a pint home. Anyhoo, back to the Jasmine Milk Tea. Tasting floral & earthy, just as it's namesake, the ice cream was smooth & pleasing. Nothing fancy or extra added to it, for the Jasmine Milk Tea was fine simply on it's on.
Service was good. I was promptly told cash was not accepted, with a sign also at the beginning of the line for extra emphasis. There is a patio with tables to dine at. Afters Ice Cream is located on the right of Jersey Mike's, across from Mi Burrito Grill at Plaza 183.
After all these years, after visiting many ice cream shops, after not visiting for so long, I can say I've experienced Afters Ice Cream. Their ice cream is good, but something to be consumed ASAP. The soft consistency makes melting an issue, so eat it as soon as you get it. $5.95/single scoop is a little pricy, but I did enjoy the Jasmine Milk Tea & look forward to trying the rest...
Read moreThis is the first time my family and I have tried this place in over 4 years of living around here, but it won't be the last! The ice cream flavors are very unique and tasty. I had the Cereal and milk flavor, my kid had the Cookiebutter, and my husband had Lychee chili. The Cookiebutter is 10/10, and that will be mine next time! The Cereal and milk was a 9/10, but only if you add the extra flakes on top, if you don't it would be a one note flavor as the flakes were so finely ground in the ice cream to have any texture. The Lychee chili was a solid 7/10, because it tasted exactly like what it was but sometimes when things are so full of flavor your mouth gets tired or overwhelmed eating all of it. There is no atmosphere or inside tables, 1 lonely table outside. I took off a star because there was a line and only one guy scooping and then ringing us all up, and he wasn't even attempting to speed things up at all, and he should have asked me if I wanted the flakes on my scoop of Cereal and milk since the description said that it comes with both, but after trying to give me my scoop without the flakes on top I asked if I could have the flakes on top in which he replied, "You could." That's not great customer service. You should ask the customer if they would like the flakes on top as that is on the description for that item. Jeez. You know the ice cream is good if you'll still go back after that. Although, there are other...
Read moreNot impressed. I would not have posted, but since the employee was rude, I figured...yes, just all around not impressed. The employee was curt, impatient, and treated me like I was an inconvenience.
Employees however can be replaced...the real reason I Prob won't return is how oblivious he was to how unsanitary he was during the process. As he reached into the ice cream bin for scoops, his entire head was in the freezer with his flakey gel hair pressed against the glass bobbing up-and-down as he was scooping...so gross. I couldn't believe it. Then, instead of completing our order first, he took us to the cash register to ring us up. Not sure the logic in that. He still had his food handling gloves on while handling money and change. Then returned to serving the rest of our order. I embarrassingly asked him to change his gloves...as a customer, I should never have to ask.
2 stars because the ice cream was tasty. Perhaps customer service and appropriate food handling training would warrant an updated review. But seriously, his little flakes falling into the ice...
