Chose this place for a Sunday evening dinner because I had a gift card, but I'm so glad we did! To be honest, my expectations were pretty low since I remember Big Johns being pretty dive-y. Everything felt clean, welcoming, and still private. We sat at the bar on their comfortable stools and watched as the bartenders worked hard yet still had fun. You must try the bacon!!! They torch it in front of you. Thick and delicious. Two people around us ordered it after seeing ours! Again, you must order the bacon! My boyfriend ordered the duck, which the bartenders raved about and he was super pleased with his choice. I got the chicken tenders and fries. These fries were so impressive! They were shaped like chips but thicker. The chicken tenders looked home made and not from a frozen box as I expected. They were in the shape of true chicken tenders that you buy in the meat section at the grocery store. Super impressed with this place!

The overview on Google for this place is that it is a “longtime dive” and rated as a “$” for price points. This is completely misleading. This is not a dive bar and not cheap. A craft beer at minimum is $8. Domestic bottles were $5. The cushioned bar seats are certainly not something found in a dive bar but good to sit in. The music was good. Our order was never put in and when we inquired 40 minutes later (at least) it was finally put in. Menu was limited. Three slices of fried green tomato is $9. That was one of the cheaper items on the menu. We were never checked on (and we were at the bar) and never offered additional drinks. Of all the places in Charleston that we hit over 5 days, this was the most unfriendly. Gave it 2 stars for music and taste. Lack of service and southern hospitality were big negatives.

Visiting Charleston for the first time i was looking for a good meal and a bar vibe. I met a friendly local Scott who works at Big Johns where he said the atmosphere was “friendly and chill” and that the food was “really good and not expensive”. Perfect description. This neighborhood bar meets subtle and cool sophistication was a great experience. Bartenders Eddie and Taylor knew their way around bourbons and recommended an excellent selection. I ordered the strip expecting a bar steak but was happily surprised with a perfect temp strip with a savory buttery melt. Eddie (the chef) even came out to ask if my expectations were met. I found the attention to service to be so accommodating and friendly. A great local jaunt for the weary traveler and even a traveling cowboy.

What a joke. Wish I didn't spend a dime here. The bartender working tonight Sunday 6/29 was so rude. Walked in and was completely ignored from the get go. He spent his whole time chumming it up at the bar with his friends. He completely ignored us. We asked if they were serving food and he said "until 1" and walked away. We had to ASK again to order. Bartender was talking about getting stoned and going to Folley beach the next day. A LITTLE attention and kindness goes a long way. I've never not tipped before but tonight I tipped nothing. That bartender deserves to be fired. Such a shame he makes this place look like crap. Don't waste your time.. especially if you're a women. You'll be completely ignored and will have to bother him for service. We had to have the bar back cash us out. What a JOKE. Also had his dirty shoes on the bar the whole time? Only nice person was the cook who came out . We had to ask for our check, napkins, waters. Like what is the point ? He was only friendly to his buddies at the bar. He literally looked our way ONCE 😅😂 also their espresso martini was the worst one I've ever had. I was so disappointed. They added egg white. Why? Made it smell and taste like wet...

I am very dissatisfied and disappointed in not only the drinks, but the service of this establishment. I created a profile in order to give this restaurant/bar an honest but poor review. I would go out of my way to not visit this bar again. My friends and I went to BJ’s on a Sunday evening and ordered one drink each. After ordering, we were not checked in on, the drinks were poorly made and then when we were ready to close out, I had to flag down a server and gave $100 on a $59.00 bill. After waiting 20 minutes for our change, I went to the bar and stood there being ignored for 10 minutes. I then reminded them of our change which was then gotten for me out of the register. It is appalling that the servers who did not even serve, took $40 for themselves and were hoping we would not notice. Please save your time, money, and frankly sanity and take your hard earned money elsewhere.

P.S there were 4 servers for a bar full of approximately 15 people. This was not a fault of being at or...

How is this for fate, we stayed at the Wentworth mansion, and asked our concierge who the best tour guide was. The answer was Tim Manly. We took our tour with Tim which was fabulous and mentioned to him that we were going to go to the Husk bourbon bar. He replied given our interest in the real local places while he had not been there his friends raved about big johns tavern. So we went.

while we are no longer spring chickens, we had the absolute best time at big John’s tavern. The food was fantastic the libations were a great value, the wait staff and bartenders were friendly and efficient. I must admit we stayed longer than I had intended. The chef owner of big John’s, park his motorcycle at the front door, if it were a more “manly “motorcycle, that might be a good idea but given its appearance perhaps you should hide it around back. When you go there you will see what I mean If I lived in Charleston this would be...
