We came in and ordered food and a couple of drinks at the bar. The guy said no table service. Paid for the food and sat at a table waiting for them to call us to the bar to grab our food. To our surprise The guy then brings out food out to the table and basically tossed it at us and gave major attitude and says we hadn’t tipped him. Mind you, I tip for service. My guy pays for the food and I leave the tip. That’s how we operate when we go out. So I hadn’t tipped not yet, because we hadn’t received any service. I ALWAYS tip service workers based on the level of service provided. Big or small I leave something. AGAIN, based on the service. But before we could taste the food or receive any kind of service he gave major attitude. And then came back with a box and bag right after dropping the food to the table telling us to box it up and leave!! SMH! HORRIBLE treatment for a paying customer. Regardless if we’re able to tip or not. (Which we were) Honestly it felt like it was more to it than that. Nobody else looked like us there. And nobody else got the attitude we got from my observation of their interactions with everyone else in the bar. Never ever have to worry about me again! And I hope whomever else that looks like me not support a bar that treats...
Read moreUsed to visit Gene's once or twice a month, loved knowing I could count on them for a great burger and, of course, a few good beers. Twice now, I've been truly disappointed in the burger I ordered, and on our most recent visit this weekend, the fries had taken a pathetic turn as well. I seem to remember some quality wedges that at least hinted at having been freshly prepared; now, they are no better than high-school cafeteria fries, completely lacking in flavor and appeal. The burger, though cooked as I requested, was reminiscent of a fast food patty hidden away in an oversized bun. We stopped in around 11 on a Saturday, and while the food was the biggest disappointment, the service was equally unimpressive. There seemed to be 1 server working the entire restaurant, and it took a good 5-10 minutes for her to procure two sodas once she'd finally made her way to our table. She either misheard my boyfriend's order, or failed to notice it came out of the kitchen with the wrong side, but no further mention was made of it. We accepted our fate and choked down a mediocre meal- probably my last at Gene's. Too many places in Charleston are trying too hard to settle for something...
Read moreWe are vacationing.Thought that we found a decent german restaurant for lunch. We should have been suspicious looking through the menu, before we ordered. It was American food. One bratwurst sandwich on the menu, and if the two dinner offerings, one was German. Weiner Snitzel ( breaded and deep fried Veal) with potato pancakes and cooked cabbage. OMG, the Snitzel was so overfried and the veal overcooked that it was impossible to eat Without taking the batter of to try and salvage a bite. Potato pancakes would have been good if the cheese sauce didn’t overpower both the pancakes and the veal. The only part saved for good flavor was the cabbage which was perfectly seasoned. My bf had a beer and I an iced tea. We had fried green tomatoes for An appetizer slathered heavily with cheese sauce. Again the sauce is too powerful for the dish. Can’t taste anything else.
We both had upset stomachs after this lunch. We will be more careful today where we dine.
Our bill was $50. We tipped the bartender $10. It wasn’t his fault.
We will never...
