My husband and I went to Wentworth Mansion for our 10 year anniversary. Our experience was mixed, but in the end we left disappointed and checked out early. I'll start with the positives...
The property, location and amenities are all great. The Mansion itself is beautiful, and it's tucked away in a quiet neighborhood a short walk from King St. The service was friendly and helpful. The included amenities are valuable: wine and hors d'oeuvre hour, free parking, free bottles of water, a small bar with brandy, port and sherry to enjoy anytime of the day or night and breakfast at Circa 1886.
Our room was very underwhelming. I booked a mansion suite for our special occasion far in advance. Because we were bringing our dog, we were downgraded to a "Garden Suite." The Garden Suite is a basement room which while large, has one small window in the bedroom making it is dark and dingy. It was also an ADA room which we didn't request or want. The toilet seat would not stay up, there was mold in the shower and bathroom ceiling. The modern amenities were a small, dated flat screen TV and small fridge that was so iced over it looked like it had a glacier inside. Our "patio" was a small table with 2 chairs that looked underneath the back stairwell to the rear entrance of the Mansion.
I can appreciate a historic hotel being quaint and charming, but our room was not Category 7. For the price paid, we felt taken advantage of. I travel a lot for work and have stayed at Hyatt's and hotels all over the world that are below level 7 that have been far nicer.
Upon check out I shared my feelings with the gentleman working the front desk. The response I received was "I'm very sorry. Hopefully you'll come back and stay with us again." No thank you. You missed the mark the first time and we left with a steep bill.
After leaving and checking the bill, I noticed that they charged us a dog fee 4 times instead of the 2 that should have been charged. The same gentleman who checked us out said he would look into it and give a credit for the double charge. Shortly thereafter I received an email that said "Dear Guest, We noticed that we had a double charge on your account for your dog. Therefore, we have adjusted and refunded $80 to your credit card VS. We apologize for the inconvenience."
You didn't notice - I did. I called and brought it to your attention.
I'm sure we would have had a much different experience and feeling if we had stayed in one of the Mansion Suites as originally booked. There are so many rave reviews of the property. The pictures of the other rooms in the mansion look fantastic! Unfortunately ours fell short of the accolades. I was disappointed in the response when I shared my feelings with...
Read moreI will start off by saying that we had mixed feelings about our arrival at the mansion. The building and the grounds are absolutely lovely but the front desk clerk seemed to be examining us head to toe. We were guided through a quick tour of the hotel and shown to our room. The room was on the 4th floor and was spacious and lovely. The breakfast in the morning was delicious and complimentary. Free parking was also a major plus. The stay was looking to end a very positive note. ||The early morning before a VERY long drive home was startling interrupted by the front desk manager who inexplicably decided to come into our room at 6 AM. The door swung open and a figure appeared. As the dark figure was standing in the door way, I assume he saw people in room and shut the door. Not knowing what had just occurred, I ran downstairs to report the incident. I didn’t know if someone was trying to break in or something to that effect. When reaching the ground floor, I informed the manager that someone came into our room. The manager, half-heartedly tried to apologize and inform me that it was him who opened the door to our room at 6 AM. Still half a sleep, I asked why opened the door when we weren’t supposed to check out until noon and he told me that the computer had a “glitch” and showed the room as being vacant. After waiting a bit for a better explanation, I was met with this, go back upstairs, attitude. ||Now, I have travelled all over and stayed at many different hotels and this has never happened to me at this time in the morning. Sure you have cleaning personnel coming in around 8:30-9 but never a manager at 6 AM. This was a very odd and off-putting situation. It makes one reevaluate and re-examine any privacy concerns. ||The mansion was a delight and the food and amenities were great but the front desk staff ruined the trip. I would seriously reconsider booking here until there is a complete overhaul of the...
Read moreThe Wentworth Mansion has completely stolen my heart. My mom and I took a mother/daughter trip to Charleston and our trip would not have been as absolutely perfect if it were not for this gem of a hotel and their absolute amazing staff. Not only is the Mansion breathtakingly beautiful, but the staff went above and beyond to make our whole Charleston experience one that we will treasure forever and have us returning ASAP. I was so sad to leave, I booked a trip to stay at the Wentworth Mansion again next month with my husband. A few highlights of the hotel included the complimentary, amazingly delicious croissants, cinnamon rolls and sticky buns we would have with our coffee and paper first thing in the morning. We would then walk over to the restaurant for our complimentary gourmet breakfast where we were greeted with fresh fruit, more pastries, and some of the best breakfast foods I have ever had. Rice flour pancakes, anyone? Steel cut oats, frittatas, etc and if you are lucky, fried green tomato eggs benedict. Cocktail hour is from 5-6, where we enjoyed complimentary iced tea and lemonade or wine and hor d'oeuvres and socialized with other guests and staff or sat quietly by the fireplace reading books about Charleston we had picked up that day. The staff's recommendations on where to go, what to see, and where to eat where all spot on. Each room is beautiful, one of the managers let me see each category of rooms that was available at the time, and each one is perfect for anyone and what they are looking for in a room. This hotel is truly spectacular. The decor and history and atmosphere is incredibly sublime, cozy, and you are made to feel right at home. I have stayed in many hotels all over the country, and the Wentworth Mansion is, by far, my favorite. It will always hold a special place in my heart. If you have any doubt over where to stay in Charleston, look no further. Every want or need...
