Overall: CofC is a very interesting college. The experience and knowledge I have gained here are invaluable.
Professors: Some professors were amazing, others not so much. But overall I received very good education. Most professors are reasonable and down-to-earth
Culture: There is a low ratio of diversity, and very few provisions made for the average mature student, as well as the commuter student.
Books Over priced books are on the menu, but if you rent from online or get a great professor, the prices can be cheaper/reasonable. Please note: there is no alternative to the on-campus bookstore physically present in Charleston.
Classes Depending on what your major is, classes can be set at excellent times, or really horrid times, but you will have to accept some of the horridly timed classes as well. Please note: generally, your professor likes the time that they have to teach as much as you do. If you love/hate that hour in the morning = so do they. Policies are same for the most part across most classes, each syllabus will be altered to suit the professor's strategic plan for the semester. If you need help with a class, the college and faculty provide resources.
Campus: The campus is pretty, fairly clean, there is plenty of chances to see the sights and sounds of downtown Charleston. Quite a number of green spaces, no lack of interesting happenings in and around Charleston, as that is where the campus is integrated into.
Food Please note that if you decide to eat downtown and you live on or under the poverty line financially, eating out downtown is expensive, especially if you are going to eat healthy. Food prices for a typical breakfast or lunch will range from $5.00 (not healthy, but filling food. Usually street corner food) to $15+(ranges from healthy to unhealthy depending on your diet).
Parking/Transportation Don't bother, just live downtown. The amount you'd pay on parking you can sink into the high, sometimes overpriced, apartment rental rates and a bicycle...or just the rent. Not to mention the public transportation in the Greater Charleston area and beyond is close to deplorable, and has a lot of untapped potential.
Nightlife No liquor on Sundays in a lot of places, bars close at 2am, traditional "clubs" are endangered species, lot of live music/performance venues, heavy...
Read moreThough the College of Charleston has a lot of great professors and I enjoyed working for them, they don't do much in terms of financial assistance for the students. In fact, even though I lived in Charleston and did all the requirements to become a citizen there, which I technically was, they did not allow me to get in state tuition and did not offer any help to me. They are also disgusting when it comes to the good ole boy philosophy of electing those with money over those with experience and intelligence. The student body is not very academic and reminded me of my high school life, and the programs that were awesome were underfunded or made political by the poorly run South Carolina government, which the school pointed to every chance they could to raise the tuition. They are more concerned about making money off their students and not giving them the best possible education. The classes were often over booked and it was hard to get into classes you needed, which was why I was unable to get my concentration. The city is going down hill, with the rich people trying to ruin what little night life there was. The beach they claim is so great, isn't and really shouldn't exist as it is constantly resanded for the rich people. The city exists on a huge fault line waiting to be destroyed and the rent is too high in the entire area. Greek life is taking over the college and if the people aren't pretentious they are too concerned about drinking to be worth talking to. Overall I had a great time but only because I forced myself too. Honestly the culture is lackluster and there is little diversity or...
Read moreMy daughter goes to CofC and is taking summer classes. She needed to drop one class and because she dropped 2 days after the deadline which was confusing at best the college is keeping $1587. I guess I now know how they can afford to pay the board of directors a lot of money every year, from my daughter's tuition that she can't use. She didn't want the money back. All she wanted to do was take a different class in the field she needed. I can't wait for her to be done with this school. The board doesn't see the tears streaming down her face and they don't have to come up with another $1587 for a class, we do. Way to go CofC. I will never recommend this school to anyone. When asked where my daughter went to college I will probably have to fib because I don't want anyone to know that she was associated to a dishonest, non-trusting, back stabber of a school...
