I've been to Legion several times in Plaza Midwood, so I was excited when I heard this one was opening with an expanded menu. Unfortunately, it was a bit disappointing.
We came for a happy hour with a large group and found out that it's not suited for happy hours. The entire downstairs is table service and the upstairs is small with no tables.
We got put on the wait list for one of the large tables and waited about half an hour for one. They told us it was ok if people stood around the table since we had more than would fit at a table.
Everything went downhill after we were seated. The waitress ignored us so people were going to the bar to get their drinks. We waited so long to order and couldn't find our waitress so we finally flagged down another waiter. He was very helpful and took our orders for us. After that, we saw our original waitress yelling at the waiter that took our order. Ten minutes later, our waitress showed up and asked if we wanted to order anything. We told her we had already ordered and she said that she made him cancel all of our orders so we had to redo them all. She didn't tell everyone this though because some people were still expecting the food they ordered from the waiter to come.
She refused to let anyone order that wasn't sitting down even though we were told it was ok for people to stand. Later in the evening, she came over and accused people of leaving without paying when it turns out she missed a beer on someone's check that was still there.
It was incredibly loud inside. You could barely hear the person sitting next to you.
Once we were actually able to order, our food actually came pretty quickly. My husband and I got an order of the ham mac and cheese, the troop flatbread, and the half barrel burger with a side of the pork and beans. The mac and cheese was amazing and so was the burger. The flatbread was pretty good. I liked the bread, but it could have used a little more flavor. The pork and beans were gross and we didn't eat more than a bite.
It really bothers me when breweries do table service. Many of the problems we had demonstrate why. If you do come here, don't expect a brewery. This is a restaurant that happens to serve Legion beer.
I don't know that I would come back here again unless I read that the service got better. The food was really good, but I can't get past how bad the service was (probably the worst I've ever had). Five star food, one...
Read moreExcellent service, massive patio, well-done interior, delicious food, AND it’s reasonable pricing. A nice change of pace for the Piedmont area behind Southpark—very different vibe than some of the stuffy restaurants nearby. It’s like getting thrown into NODA or the new Southend for a minute.
Shoutout to John, our server, who was an absolute delight 👌🏻 Keep him around Legion!
For those interested—the Servers and staff are currently wearing masks and adhering to appropriate distancing guidelines. the spaciousness of the inside and outside seating areas make it simple to keep the 6-foot distancing for COVID.
The dishes are tasty, creative, and even with the classic dishes like burgers or pizza or sandwiches the kitchen puts a unique twist. Menu rotates pretty often, so don’t hold back if you want to try something.
Nice selection of beers and broad menu options (including a great vegetarian menu that comes separately). Generous pours from the bar for mixed drinks.
For appetizers, we ordered grilled shishito peppers with an olive oil, sea salt and lime seasoning and the pickle plate (mixed veggies, blueberries, watermelon, and a side of hard boiled egg). Both were good, but the shishito papers were especially tasty (and they could easily serve 4 people). For main dish, I tried the bbq plate—a chicken and local pork combo with beans, slaw and macaroni. Really really good! sizewise it was more food than I could eat.
You can absolutely get a filling entree (or two appetizers) for $15-$20. Some are as much as $30 (like the Grouper Filet). But there’s a Brazilian steak for $20! the average price point is more around $13-$17. Beers are on par with other restaurants price-wise, but wider selection as expected from a brewery.
The building is shaped like a keg. Didn’t realize it and when I did it made me laugh. Maybe it will make you smile too :) the inside has lots of space and a pleasant natural light from windows...
Read moreWe went here because my husband loves Juicy J and I had been for a brunch and the food was incredible. We got seated fairly quickly and the rest of our party arrived as we were getting settled, the server came up and said he’d give us some time to get settled. I ordered myself a drink and a drink for my son. When he was bringing everything back, I was a little confused because I was expecting a kids cup of some type, but we were initially served a glass. The server came back and got our food order and then disappeared again and when it was ready, he was nowhere to be found. My husband eventually got up to try and get some ketchup, and ended up catching another server. It wasn’t until we were almost done with our food that he came back to check on us and we finally discovered they do not have typical ketchup. The food was amazing. I had the smash burger and it was one of the best burgers I’ve ever had and would go back to have this again. My husband and friend got the chicken sandwich and they both said it was really tasty and they liked it, but they both expected a bigger chicken breast. I had the Mac and cheese and it was delicious and would also go back for this. When we finally found our server to get our checks because the kids were getting restless, he had a handheld so we were able to pay immediately, but he also kinda stood over us so we really felt uncomfortable. Overall, the food made up for the poor service. I would definitely go back - the food was so good, I didn’t even...
