Really disappointed by my most recent visit to Niedlov’s. I have visited previously and have enjoyed their food as well as recommended it to guests in town for my wedding. Unfortunately, this past Friday my experience was spoiled by the unfriendly and inattentive service my party and I received.
I placed a pickup order at 8:50 a.m. Friday morning for 4 coffee beverages, one breakfast sandwich, one slice of quiche, and one sticky bun. In other words, only one food item that would need to be made to order. My order confirmation estimated the order would be ready for pickup at 9:25 - quite a long wait for a relatively simple order, but not a huge deal. A few minutes before 9:25, when our order still had not appeared, my friend asked a staff member who was fulfilling pickup orders for an update. I was shocked by the disdainful look she shot us and the air of condescension with which she informed us it was only (then) 9:25. We had patiently waited for 35 minutes at this point and we were only inquiring, not complaining. Such a simple request for an update doesn’t merit the aggressive response received.
While we waited for our food for a few more minutes, it became apparent that the barista was not working on our coffee orders - now several minutes after our pickup time of 9:25. When I inquired with the barista to confirm he had received our coffee order, he suddenly found a paper with my name and order on it. Despite having forgotten to begin our order, he again delayed our order by making at least six craft drinks that had just been ordered at the counter. I stood in amazement as he prioritized these much more recent coffee orders over a large order that had been placed at this point at least 40 minutes prior, which he had forgotten or ignored during that time.
When our food came out a few minutes later, I realized I had forgotten another friend’s order for toast with avocado spread. Online, this option was available - toast with avocado spread added. My friend is vegan, so she didn’t want to order off of the menu for the avocado toast with egg on it. Back we went through the line to order a piece of toast with avocado spread. When we gave this simple order, we were met with yet another employee sneering at us, haughtily asking “How would I even do that?” Perhaps she should review the online ordering which plainly includes this option.
I am giving one star only because the quality of food and drink remained high. In the future I look forward to finding new places to get breakfast and coffee in...
Read moreI'd read wonderful things about this place and I was very close by, so I thought I'd pop over to grab a treat for later since I'm not in Chattanooga too often.
Parking is a little challenging but I managed to find fairly cheap street parking (though it did require me to back my car into the spot and I couldn't stay for longer than I wanna say an hour - that was an adventure lol). This is a busy part of town with a decent bit of traffic, limited crosswalks imo, and some new construction obstructing some of the sidewalk, so the walk over was a little challenging too.
I was rewarded with a cozy cafe atmosphere. There also appears to be a beautiful patio outback. It was fairly loud inside so if I'd stayed I likely would've chosen the patio.
Service wasn't unfriendly but it wasn't super warm either; you order at the counter. No one was ahead of me and so I walked up. The employee said hello and I greeted her back and said I was sorry but that I might need a minute to decide. Her only response was a smile I can only describe as pitying, which is kind of funny in retrospect.
I decided I didn't really care for the sound of any of their coffee drinks, so I settled for some pastries. Unfortunately, the selection was quite limited. I understand that's partially on me as it was fairly late in the afternoon (I wanna say around 1-1:30ish), but I was still a little bummed. I got a peanut butter and jelly pastry and, on a whim, a rye chocolate chip cookie. I took them both home to share with my husband for dessert after dinner.
I was most excited for the PB&J number but it was only okay. I loved the creativity of the idea but it just didn't hit the mark for me flavor-wise. The pastry was light and flaky and had lots of nice buttery layers, but there wasn't much jelly at all and the peanut butter notes had a very...not burnt, per se, but kind of earthy and dry vibe, which I didn't love. It wasn't bad but I wouldn't order one again.
The sleeper hit, however, was the rye chocolate chip cookie. I was skeptical because I'm not huge on rye but I'm glad my whim was rewarded because this cookie was delicious. Soft and chewy, slightly crisp edges, rich chocolate, and the rye gave it an almost banana-bread like nuttiness. It was so good! Would definitely get this cookie again.
Overall, if I have a chance and choose to return in the future, I'll definitely come earlier and choose my goodies carefully. Thanks for the...
Read moreThis review is purely based off the service we received. We are from out of town and we decided to try this restaurant out because we heard good things and it was near our hotel. We did our research and found that it was dog friendly. So we get there and the line is out the door. We join the line with our dogs and wait. As we get to the door, an employee comes out and tells us that we can't bring our dogs inside. We agree and let her know that we had no plans to bring them inside. We were waiting to be seated outside with our dogs. She then repeats herself about the dogs not being allowed inside and we, yet again, agree and clarify to her that we were purely just waiting in line because we thought we were in a line to get seated. Turns out, we were in the line to order food right away. I leave my husband outside with the dogs and wait in the line to order food. I stand there, realizing the situation, and decide that I no longer want to dine there anymore. After our interaction with the staff, we immediately got turned off. Instead of helping us or giving us the run down of how seating worked, we were greeted with a condescending employee who shooed us away. This is the kind of place that we hate because after the exchange, everyone there just seemed so stuck up and pretentious. Yes, your place looks nice and sure, your food might be good, but it doesn't mean anything if your service sucks. Stop limiting your space to hippies and people who care more about taking pictures of their food than actually enjoying it and make the overall place more welcoming to us average Joes who just want to have a nice breakfast...
