Chicago's Havana Grill: A Pan-Latin Flavored Restaurant

We have been wanting to visit this joint for so many years, given it is only a 10 min walk away, but for some reason we kept forgetting! We love Cuban food, we just spent 8 days in Miami doing nothing but eating good Cuban food, so this is a good treat for us back in Chicago. The chimichangas are crispy and filled with a ton of chicken, it was a bit bland for us and that creame base sauce didn't really help. However the empanadas were awesome just by themselves, the filling were very flavorful, and what made them even better was the basil garlic olive oil dip. It basically comes with everything else, so I put the chimichangas in the tip and all of a sudden it tasted 10 times better. The Ropa Vieja was very tender and packed with explosive flavors as it should be, so are the accompanying rice and beans. The Cubano sandwich was on point, with pull pork and just the right amount of cheese and pickles, I personally prefer a little bit more mustard. The Steak Jabarito was a bit bland, the steak needs more seasoning, but if you dip that in the basil garlic oil, your are good to go! The desserts were just okay for me, I can't really taste the guava in the guava cheese cake, nor could I taste the lime in the key lime pie (it was just sour). The pie base was wet and hard, rather than crunchy and loose. It felt store bought to me. Over all, solid Cuban joint, we will come back for more specialty dishes and see how they compare to the joints in Miami! The prices are very reasonable, and breasts services.

Since the below review of our takeout experience, we’ve had two more amazing meals at the restaurant and can’t wait to go back again. Every single thing we try is fantastic, including pollo coco limon, enchiladas, plantains, flan, sangria, guavo mezcalita, and banana daiquiri. We ordered takeout from Havana Grill tonight and it was probably our best takeout in 2+ months of quarantine. They currently have a special menu that is smaller than their normal menu but still sizable. I got the chicken chimichangas, which came with fresh salsa and this amazing green cream sauce on the side. My boyfriend got the grilled salmon, which came with jalapeño mashed potatoes. We split a side of rice with black beans, which came with some grilled plantain on top. It was a great meal and we can’t wait to go back again, especially once we can take advantage of their awesome drink specials!

Being a person who lives in Miami, I know my Cuban food and I got to say that Havana Grill in the River North district of downtown does not disappoint. This spot offers many classics from the Pan-Latin cuisine and their tropical cocktails are no joke either. One dish that was a particular standout was the Carne Con Tequila. This dish comes with a skirt steak that is marinated in a tequila-based sauce with a side of fries that are tossed in an amazing chimichurri sauce. Fans of Mojitos will also not be disappointed here as they have a good selection of Mojito flavors + they're definitely not cheap on the alcohol which is always a plus. So if you're looking for classic Latin fare, I definitely think that Havana Grill is a spot you should check out when in Chicago. The vibe is really nice, the staff is super friendly, and the food was really delicious.
