This was definitely a letdown for us, but obviously reviews are strictly based on opinions and personal preference. So you may absolutely love Better. We did not.
When ordering, the young girl taking our order couldn’t answer an ingredient question for me. No problem. But she couldn’t ask the older lady because she was on the phone. The entire time. Another young girl answered the question. I dunno…it’s like the whole exchange just gave inexperienced and unprofessional vibes.
Hubby got an underwhelming cheeseburger. Had to get back in line to ask for condiments which weren’t offered to him when ordering. I got the shrimp pesto. Shrimp were large, fresh, and tasty. The pesto sauce was just ok but turned to caked up mess that looked like Crisco pretty quickly because eating outside in chilly weather isn’t conducive to keeping pesto sauce hot and normal consistency. Lesson learned: Don’t order pasta from a food truck. Pasta needs to be plated in a kitchen/dining room on a warmed plate, not eaten out of a carry out container outside on a picnic table in 60 degree weather. I’m faulting myself for getting pasta and warning others of choosing a different menu item more than blaming Better, but it did dampen my expectations. The flies and seagulls were laughing at me.
Based on all the good reviews I was really looking forward to trying the roasted brussell sprouts. Huge fail for me. I was comparing them to some I had eaten the week prior from a restaurant in DC (where we live). Those had flavor using pink salt and lemon juice and the texture was dry & crispy like they were made in an air fryer. Totally amazing! The brussell sprouts from Better had no flavor besides VERY burnt and VERY greasy. It tasted like they were soaked in oil and then just left under a broiler until they were completely murdered. Sadly, after we had just a few, we tossed them in the trash.
All in all, I do recommend you try this food truck. All local businesses should be given a fair shot. I’m also keeping in mind that maybe we just ordered the wrong thing or it was an off day. So for us, it’s a solid 3 stars but I can think of other places I’d like to spend $44. Yep. $44 for this very mediocre...
Read moreWe stopped in to Better. on July 12th after reviewing the menu at numerous restaurants on CI. This humble food truck stood out for both price and menu offerings. Our family had the brussel sprouts, potato rocket, crabcake sandwich, Nashville hot soft shell crib sandwich, and shrimp and grits. Everything, and I do mean EVERYTHING, was delicious. As a South Carolinian who lives in close proximity to New Orleans, I've tried every homemade and restaurant offering of shrimp and grits that I've encountered. While I've had better than Better., it was only at someone's kitchen table. The Nashville hot soft shell was delectable according to my wife, because there were scant crumbs left. The crabcake was also delicious, and while I generally prefer mine broiled, I'd happily come back here for the fried any day of the week. Finally, the potato rocket and brussel sprouts were fabulous plays on traditional side dishes. They complimented the meal beautifully and would make great snacks if you weren't looking for a whole meal. Why there isn't a line down the block for this place is beyond me. I can honestly say it's the best food truck I've encountered, and probably the best food on CI. I had hoped waiting a bit to write the review would temper my effusive praise, but it was just that good! My compliment to both the young lady who made excellent suggestions and to the chef who...
Read moreMy girlfriend mentioned there was a Nashville Hot Chicken sandwich in Chincoteague so I had to try it. I lived in Nashville for 13 years and Hattie B's, which I personally would choose over the original Prince's Hot Chicken, is always top of my list to eat when I travel back there. Having been let down so many times by people trying to duplicate Nashville's claim, I had high hopes when I heard the Better. owner had traveled there and came back with a seacret or two. Well this is as close as it comes outside of Nashville!
I meant to complete this review a year ago when I first tried it, but just now realized I had not completed my review until my girlfriend, who was in Chincoteague, stopped by to bring me one home for dinner three whole states away to Fenwick Island (Ha! It's a little over an hour away). A big thank you to the gentleman for the extra care you showed her in transporting the sandwich! While I'm sure there is other great food in Chincoteague, I can't imagine ever visiting there without picking up this little reminiscent taste of Music City! You...
