A Hidden Gem in Chula Vista – La Concha Bakery
La Concha Bakery on East Street in downtown Chula Vista is an absolute must-visit for anyone who loves baked goods. I’ve never come across another bakery quite like this one—it's truly unique in both its selection and experience.
From the moment you step inside, you’ll notice a charming setup that makes choosing your treats a fun and interactive experience. At the entrance, there's a table filled with tongs and trays—grab one, then take your time browsing the impressive selection of baked goods. Their offerings lean heavily toward traditional Mexican pastries, but they also have familiar American favorites like donuts. What really makes this place stand out, though, are the unique and hard-to-find items that you won’t see at just any bakery. The prices are extremely reasonable, with most items costing no more than a few dollars.
At the front, there’s also a fridge stocked with larger cakes, cheesecakes, and individually sized desserts. If you’re in the mood for something savory, don’t miss their empanada-style baked goods—flaky, buttery, and filled with delicious options like chicken, beef, and jalapeño cream cheese. They do offer coffee, though I found it to be just okay. But honestly, the baked goods are the real stars here.
The bakery is clean, bright, and welcoming, with a vibrant mural on the side of the building adding to its charm. The counter staff is incredibly friendly, efficiently boxing up your selections when you’re ready to check out.
One thing to note: parking can be tricky. There are a few spots right in front, but since the bakery is right off a busy street, pulling in and out can be a challenge—so be cautious. If it’s peak hours, you might need to find parking in the nearby residential area. Also, while the bakery is wheelchair accessible, it is not pet-friendly.
All in all, La Concha Bakery is an absolute gem. If you're anywhere near downtown Chula Vista, this spot is not to be missed. Whether you're craving something sweet or savory, you’ll leave with a box full of delicious,...
Read moreIf zero stars was an option that is what I would rate. My friend and I asked for a box instead of the dirty unsanitary trays they offer. As we had witnessed one of the employees briefly wiping down trays and tongs with a dirty old dish rag. The young cashier hesitantly gave us one and looked so annoyed. We were planning on buying a lot so we knew we would need a box and it would be easier and much more sanitary to do it that way. My friend and I continued looking at everything excitedly to try some new pan dulce. Then an older co-worker came out and just glared at us. She was about to say something to my friend’s 3 year old who was holding the case door open for me and I interjected before she could. I let him know to close it for me as I sensed she was going to say it rudely. From then on both employees just stared at us with an annoying aura. So we chose the last few things. I paid for mine and the girl didn’t say anything to me. Not a thank you or anything. My friend was now done and the older lady rang her up not saying a word. My friend asked her for a lemon tart that was in a case they could only grab. She never responded to her or acknowledged her. We weren’t even sure if she heard us? Then she just walks off puts it in her box and tells her the total. Flies were flying around outside of the pastry cases as well as a couple inside. Very rude, unwelcoming atmosphere. I will not be returning. They remodeled the store but their customer service...
Read moreI've been coming to this bakery for a few years now. We love the bread and their torta bread (teleras). We've never had issues with the bread getting moldy. Thursday evening I stopped by after work to get a bag of teleras. I took them out today (Saturday) to make tortas and the bread was covered in mold. I asked my husband to go back to the bakery and ask them if they would replace it. If not, I told him just to get another bag. When he went to ask, an older lady in the back of the store came out to talk to him. She rudely said she didn't know if we had left the bread out and it molded. She is wanted to know why we didn't return it right away. My husband explained we didn't know it had molded until today when we were going to eat it. She continued her rude behavior saying they wouldn't replace the bread. She could have apologized and said she couldn't replace it. Instead she raised her voice and blamed us for the mold. Like I said I've been coming to that bakery for years now and the bread has never gotten moldy in less than 48 hours. She rudely told my husband to take another bag of bread and left to the back. I am very annoyed with this type of service. If you are willing to lose a customer over a $3 bag of bread, you have issues. She didn't have to be rude. This is the reason why small businesses lose loyal customers. I don't need someone raising their voice and blaming me for the quality of...
