I ate at their brunch location two doors down this morning with my coworkers. We were excited, but left disappointed for several reasons:
Strong Sage Smell: As soon as we walked in, we were hit with a strong sage scent. They burn sage throughout the space, which is fine in theory—but it’s not common practice in restaurants, and we had no idea it would be part of the experience. The smell was overwhelming. When we asked to air out the space by opening the door, staff gave us attitude.
No Menu Flexibility: One coworker is allergic to cheese, and we ordered the avocado toast to share. We asked for the cheese on the side so I could still enjoy it, but the waitress refused and pointed to a no-substitutions policy on the back of the menu. I understand restaurants setting rules, but it felt inflexible and inconsiderate of dietary needs.
Sweet Latte Miscommunication: I ordered the hot honey lavender latte and asked if it was sweet. The waitress said no, but it ended up being very sweet—just something to note if you’re trying to limit sugar.
Billing Issues with the Mujer Divina Plate: When it came time to pay, the waitress read the items aloud to one person in our group who was covering the bill (we all Venmoed her). No printed check was provided until after payment. When we reviewed the receipt, we noticed we were charged $22 for each Mujer Divina plate, even though the menu listed it at $20 (see picture). We were also charged a large party fee, even though there were only five of us (most places count six or more as a large party).
The waitress said the price difference was due to tax, but that didn’t make sense since tax was already added at the end of the receipt. We spoke with an owner who apologized, explained that their system hadn’t been updated with new pricing, and refunded us the $10 overcharge. When we brought up the large party fee, he first said it applied to groups of five or more, then checked and confirmed it was actually six or more. He refunded the tip we had added, since we’d unknowingly tipped on top of the auto-gratuity. We told them to keep the large party fee since it matched what we would have tipped anyway. We appreciated the resolution but couldn’t help but wonder how often others are overcharged without realizing.
Only Bottled Water: We were surprised to learn they don’t offer tap water—only bottled. It’s a small thing, but it added to the overall sense that the customer experience wasn’t prioritized.
The food—including the Mujer Divina plate—was really good, but the service and experience didn’t match. I wouldn’t return or recommend this place. Good food matters, but so does good service—and that was lacking here.
UPDATE: I previously mentioned a concern about a deleted social media post. I’ve since learned it was removed due to group policies, not by the owners or management of the business, so I removed that portion of this review to reflect that.
ANOTHER UPDATE: Adding a star to my rating, as I appreciate the owners taking the time to address...
Read moreThis coffee shop has been a favorite of mine since their National City location opened! My boyfriend and I both love the spot - so much so that he’s surprised me with their drinks and food on more than one occasion (yay!)
For me, the common ritual is to order the iced Rita Moreno with oatmilk and birriaquiles. The flavors for both are amazing and I can’t wait to eat the birriaquiles each time. I always end up eating them as I drive! I’ve tried every burrito too and each one is a hit. I’m not a bean and cheese fan, but I still tried it just because each one was so good and it did not disappoint!
When you visit, you’ll notice the cafe takes orders by kiosk and register, but I recommend ordering online and letting the staff know you’re there. I’ve introduced friends and family to the place and they’ve loved the drinks each time. I don’t even live anywhere near their cafes (La Jolla, then North Park) but I make the drive happily. A new seasonal option is the pumpkin white mocha and let me tell you - Starb** and these other cafes could never. There are so many cafes that miss out on these options or don’t care to perfect it, but Mujer Divina’s pumpkin latte is literally the best thing I’ve had as a pumpkin drink option * e v e r * and chef Priscilla Curiel hit the head on the nail with it!
Priscilla is an award-winning chef and it shows through the taste and love you get with each order. You can tell there’s so much care put into each creation! I’m patiently awaiting the opening of their brunch spot next-door and I’d hope you would too, because you don’t want to miss out on this gem in Chula Vista that we all love and adore. Great service, thee absolute cutest cafe, and a welcoming spot for your friends and family to eat breakfast with yummy cafecito. I truly wish I could have gotten the chance to share this with my grandparents. They would...
Read moreI purposefully waited until the hype calmed down to come here. I’ve been to the National City location, so I knew what to expect from the quality and flavor of the lattes and burritos. Probably one of the most flavorful birria burritos and papas con chorizo burritos I’ve ever had. The birria is definitely on the salty side. Excellent salsa, too. I repeated the Coco Chanel (hot) latte but really need to try their other drinks. Although these are yummy treats, it is quite pricey. $23 for a latte and two small burritos (also don’t expect taco shop burritos the size of your forearm).
You’ll scan the QR code to order, but beware not all food items are available. They do not sell the birriaquiles here. Yes, the google photos will fool you. We waited close to 20 min for our food. If I had somewhere else to be, this would definitely be an inconvenience.
This specialty shop is extremely small and crowded with people just waiting around for their orders to be called. There aren’t any individual tables inside; just one long bar with 8 stools that you have to squeeze in and share with everyone else trying to grab a seat. It’s not a place you can go with a friend and hang out over a nice cup of coffee. With the lack of space, seating, congestion, it is nearly impossible to enjoy your latte & burrito. You are either taking it to go or eating in the car. Such a bummer because this business had so much potential for having an enjoyable atmosphere. I hope their sister restaurant next door has more accommodations.
Overall, a great place to try or pick up on the go. Excellent lattes & burritos. Friendly staff. Two stars knocked off for the high prices and lack of space...
