Great addition to Beacon, but needs work
We were thrilled upon seeing that Beacon offers a variety of modern and different matchas here at Matcha Thomas. We escape the city to get a little bit of air, but seeing such a big part of culinary culture spread through upstate is amazing.
It was the weekend and naturally, the line was out the door. Unfortunately, the wait to even order was rather long. Drinks seem to be made right after ordering, so the initial wait simply just to put in order in is rather long.
What it seemed to mark was a lack of efficiency. Different people were working on different things: not one person consistently on the cashiering side, labeling cups, making matchas, washing dishes, it was a bit of a jumbled up system. When waiting to order, I couldn't help but feel bad for the girls working. They were clearly so backed up and were working tirelessly without an efficient system.
We ordered our matcha, the elderflower derivative, and were surprised to hear that the "power" part of the drink was just to make the name more interesting, not necessarily an indicator of anything else. I was disappointed to see that the sugar options weren't super flexible, with 50% sugar being the next down from 100%, and then after going to 25% and 0%.
What was nice though, was that my matcha came out rather quickly. Unfortunately, the matcha was not good. The elderflower felt like a second thought, and was barely noticeable. It tasted more-so like very matcha flavored water, rather than anything else. You would think for at least 50% sugar you'd get a little bit of sweetness, but it was pretty bitter.
Overall, my partner remarked that it was "not worth the wait," and that the matcha itself was super forgettable and un-noteworthy. I was disappointed to say that I agreed with him.
While the branding, vibe, and relaxation room are super nice concepts, the drinks themselves seem to need work, whether it's the method of which they are being created (seamlessly, efficiently, etc), or the taste themselves. Significantly more to be left desired.
Interesting note as well: there was a woman named Betty mentioning that there was a little fruit fly in her drink. I didn't think much of it, but when I was waiting in line to order, I did notice a bunch of little fruit flies just zooming around and hovering over by the matcha making area. Wonder if there's some sort of sanitation issue--it wasn't super obvious, but it did make me raise an eyebrow after perusing through some of the reviews.
Overall, I'd likely not order from here again. While I was excited about the idea, the matcha itself wasn't anything special--it did definitely give me energy and wake me up, but I can do that with a cuppa joe, that would likely taste...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreExtremely upset and disappointed with my interaction and order. This place will never EVER get my business again. I ordered 2 thai milk teas with tapioca boba. This is something that I get from authentic thai restaurants so I know what it is supposed to taste and look like. I even make it at home. They first asked if I wanted oat milk which I said yes to even though itās not what is normally used in this drink. I tasted my drink and realized it was not what my husband and I had ordered. It tasted nothing like the tea that is traditionally used even when I make it at home. I kindly asked for something else and they told me I could purchase something at a discounted price. I then challenger her and asked how it made and she said she used black tea. Thai tea is not made with black tea so they are advertising one thing and handing out a different product. My husband and I paid over $17 for two drinks that went straight in the trash. I did not ask for my money back but asked for something else in its place. If they would have taken the opportunity to make it right I would not be writing this review. They will never get my business ever again and should train their people on proper customer...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThis place is an actual gem. I stopped by on what was arguably probably their busiest day this whole year and unfortunately had to leave before I could order. I came back the next day and not only did the co-owners remember me and apologize for the long wait time, they had surveyed almost everyone in line in order to get ideas on how to improve the wait time and ordering process and it worked! Truly so impressed by this level of customer service and dedication to your business. Itās so rare to see that these days and itās why small businesses are the heart and soul of a town. On top of that, my drink was fantastic, the place was sparkling clean with a super calming atmosphere, and all of the employees were 100% on it, even towards the end of another insanely busy day. Kudos to battling a worldwide matcha shortage, increased popularity from TikTok, and a super busy fall season. I will be back every time...
