Update: It has come to my attention that the owner responded to my original review by posting my personal information (from my booking with the b&b) alongside defamatory content. A guest at any establishment is fully within their right to write a true & accurate review of their experience at said establishment without the backlash of the totally inappropriate and unethical actions this owner has taken. They should be seen as further reflection of the owner’s behavior vis-à-vis her business practices – she had to be put on notice by all the agencies I have since had to contact as well as by TripAdvisor.
Original TripAdvisor review:
I stayed at Beacon Bed & Breakfast for two nights with my certified service dog. Our plans were fluid due to a sick friend I was visiting in town and my dog who fell ill. As I returned from visiting my friend on the second morning, I was ready to book for one more night when I noticed the unmistakable smell of cigarette smoke within the b&b. (The owner was found to have smoked in the b&b then covered up the smell with mint essential oil, apparently assuming no one would notice). This is an action that puts the health of guests, especially those with critical medical conditions, at risk, so I politely approached her and asked whether she noticed the smell. Her immediate response was to She was concerned with only one thing, and that was for me to book and pay for the night ahead. Whereas I was concerned with not only my health, but also her behavior at this point. I told her politely again that the smell was overt at which point she chose to go hysterical and accuse me of calling her a liar. She told me I had 15 minutes to pack up and leave. Within that time frame, she called the police(!) under the false pretense of trespassing – totally unnecessary and humiliating as I was clearly no longer interested in staying and calmly packing up my things. It should be noted that one of the officers remarked once outside that she was “unhinged” and it was safer to leave anyway. Side note, and this should go without saying: even if she had not been smoking, it is on her as the owner of the b&b, to offer professional, polite response to a patron’s concern, not to attack them. Several days after this terrible incident, I requested a refund for our stay, via email: given the gravity of the incident, a refund would have been an appropriate start towards remediation. She did not give me the courtesy of a response to this email. I wrote again and informed her that, due to awareness of several violations of our rights, including the New York State Clean Indoor Air Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and her own policy as clearly stated on the website, I would be filing several formal complaints. She then accused me of blackmailing her, which is ludicrous as I would be filing the complaints anyway (they are now filed and in process, in addition to a complaint with the New York State’s Division of Consumer Protection). In response to my email informing her of the above, the owner launched a crude, personal attack on us, then took it upon herself to sign up my phone and email to be spammed by right-wing organizations, substance abuse centers, insurance companies, debt collectors and mortgage lenders (within minutes of sending her my email, this occurred, so not coincidental, but, of course, unethical, and is also being pursued. Any further emails & phone calls will amount to harassment). If all the above isn’t enough, there were ants all over the kitchen due to food left open in the cabinets, and the bed in the room was old and uncomfortable. A nasty response to this review will come, I’m sure, as shown when others have posted negative feedback, but it will do nothing but make the owner and her business look worse. Fellow travelers, other Beacon accommodations to consider in favor of this one: The Factory The Roundhouse Dutchess Inn & Spa and numerous lovely and...
