I ate at Mooney's a year ago randomly and was pleasantly surprised how delicious the food was. I got the hawk wings with Mac n cheese dinner. It was so good I couldn't stop ranting and raving how delicious the food was to people I knew.
I live in West Virginia with my fiance and I told her about this place going on and on how she'll love the food at Mooney's. I planned on driving 5 and a half hours from WV to take my Fiance on a summer vacation in the Corning NY area with the main focus of treating her to Mooney's.
I'm currently working 30 minutes away from Mooney's and had some down time today, so I decided to go hiking in Montour, New York stopping at Mooney's first for some lunch.
I walk in at 11:40am telling the hostess it's just me eating. She leads me to the upstairs bar even tho their was plenty of seating available downstairs. It's just me and two other patrons upstairs when I sit at the bar.
The bartender/server greets me and hands me a menu. I open it up and I'm looking at the meal I've been craving for a whole year, the hawk wings with Mac n cheese. The bartender sees me looking at it and informs that they are out of hawk wings and they've been out of it for months. Bummer!
I was deeply disappointed... Mad to be honest since I went out my way to eat here. I ask for a tall glass of beer. The bartender gets a regular cup and doesn't even bother to pour the beer in the cup.
While I make an alternative food selection, the bartender disappears downstairs for over 10 minutes. Agitating because I was running on a tight time constraint. She finally comes back and I put in an order for honey garlic tenders with fries.
It took over 20 minutes for my order to arrive. I'm pissed off at this point. The tenders came out warm, not hot like they should have been since the order took so long to arrive. My fries were cold and unseasoned. I only ate two pieces of fries. The tenders were big, juicy, nourishing and yummy.
While I ate, the bartender never checked on me. Her service was a smidge below average and a smidge above terrible. My meal came to $21.59, I tipped $10, a 47% tip even tho her service warranted a $2 tip. As I got up to leave the establishment, 3 patrons next to me quipped "where'd the bartender go, do she want to get paid or what?"... So it wasn't just me who noted the less than stellar service.
Unfortunately I have no intentions of ever continuing my patronage to Mooney's nor recommend it to friends, family, and associates as I previously...
Read moreGood sports bar atmosphere with wide tables, good spacing, large tv screens and warm tones. The place certainly has an identity when you walk in. Staff are friendly enough. Here's the nitty gritty: There is no wait area. With the 20 min wait time we had there was nowhere for my husband and I to stand or sit that wasn't in the way of the host or waitress going up or down the stairs. We were tempted to go elsewhere. The reception desk is a bit long and could have made room for a least 3 or 4 chairs. About the food, a good majority of the food is marinated or fried with a possible food allergen so if you have unique food needs be prepared to ask for something to be cooked in a separate pan. Your options are still limited. It took close to 40 minutes for the food to arrive. What was ordered: Him: (1) 1/2 lb medium cooked burger with provolone cheese, mushrooms and lettuce. No tomatoes or onions. Salad side. Me: (1) same burger as his except with cheddar cheese and add sweet peppers. French fries as the side. What was observed: (1) 1/2 lb well done charred bottom (dry) burger with provolone cheese, mushrooms and lettuce. (1) 1/2 lb well done charred top and bottom (dry) burger with cheddar cheese, lettuce, and a regular chopped green pepper (uncooked) on the side of the plate. No mushrooms as requested. No sweet peppers as the menu stated as an option.
I had to flag the waitress down after a few minutes of not seeing her to ask where the mushrooms were. She said she didn't know I wanted them. I asked her about the random regular pepper. She says "oh, the sweet peppers are the yellow and red, right? We don't have those."...But your menu says you do. To top it off, they were not even sautéed, just cold out the fridge.
I wasn't impressed with the burger. I only ate half because I had already been waiting an hour before the food arrived but the fries were good. They weren't greasy...
Read moreWe were hyped for Mooney's when we found it as a place near the Corning Museum of Glass being that it was known for its Mac & Cheese, and traveling with two kids seemed destined to be a hit.
Let me start off, the staff was phenomenal. They were beyond polite, cheery, and attentive. And the atmosphere was great.
But it pains me to write that the food was a massive letdown. The french fries and the Bavarian pretzels were the highlight of the food. And the beer cheese sauce was very flavorful. That is where the positive ends unfortunately, because we wanted to live this place.
My daughters kiddie burger was only a tiny bit bigger than a golf ball, and was beyond well done.
And while the mac and cheeses looked VERY impressive. The looks is all they had going.
The mac & cheeses were all bland. I got their local, award winning "The Bomb" which was steak and Hungarian peppers. I don't know who judged that competition in Corning, but they must have been having an off day for taste buds. There was zero flavor to the mac, and only when I'd get a pepper was there any flavor. No one in my family enjoyed it either.
This still doesn't get better from here...
My wife for the Buffalo mac. Same thing. Bland with no flavor. It's almost like they don't bother to properly season the cheese sauce. Sure, there was Frank's Red Hot sauce flavor, but you couldn't taste the cheese. She effectively had macaroni with Frank's on it.
My son got the regular M&C that they are supposed to be famous for. Once again, the entire family agreed that it just tasted like unseasoned sauce on macaroni.
I actually felt bad writing this review because the staff was so nice, and we left a huge tip because we felt so bad about not liking the food. But alas, it wasn't great. I wish we had picked something else...
