As a person with a medical disability recognised by the Americans with Disabilities act (as said by several licensed physicians) that prevents me from wearing a face mask, I often run into conflict. However, I have never experienced such attitude and pure discrimination from employees from any business, other than here at Chapter One. I tried explaining to the two baristas that I have a medical condition which puts me as risk when wearing a mask (yes, that can actually be a real thing.) The response from one of them was quite literally and I quote “I don't care if you have a disability you must wear a mask in here.” This is very wrong. After I sat down with with my party, and started reading a store magazine, this employee decided to call the police on me!! This is totally insane! He then started cursing at me telling me to leave. I was ultimately refused service for a heath issue out of my control. Keep in mind at this point I was seated without a mask, and so was he. Isn't that ironic? The police officer felt sorry for how I was treated in there.. Totally would not recommend supporting this business, especially since the owner (the mayor of Plattsburg) swore an oath to serve the people of this great city.. This business is a total let down and shame to...

Chapter One feels more like your friends home than a coffee shop. While other shops specialize in getting drinks out and getting customers out of the door, Chapter One is an inviting space that welcomes everyone and you can't help but want to linger a while to slow down and enjoy your drinks/food.

The baristas are top notch. They are always warm and inviting and its noticeable the effort they take to remember regulars preferences and taking their time with new customers.

The space is ideal for deep work with tables to sit at, or comfortable couches and chairs to lounge in and visit with friends and family. The walls are adorned with local artwork in addition to hosting markets on occasion for local vendors to sell their wares. Management works with local businesses to provide customers with food options, ex: breakfast wraps. The Owner/Manager is always serving up new drink specials with the season. They create a sense of community with their different events from book club meetings, hosting workshops and seminars, raising money for charity and other special events. All this being said, Chapter One fosters a sense of community in this...

Closest thing to a classic coffeehouse this town has got, supporting local artists!. Nice space and spare but competently equipped.

Two beefs:

  1. the team has little engagement with customers, failing to acknowledge customer or offer any explanation of delays. Older barista guy failed to make eye contact with most customers unless directly asked a question. Other team members on other days were not able to explain with any detail, the roast or the taste of their coffee beans. But what was worse in my mind, was that they seemed to not care.
  2. the roast and pulls make for bitter lattes, even with 14 ounces of sweet whole milk; even with a risstretto pull (shorter). Bitter is not better. It’s worse. It’s a sign of acidity in beans, or bad roast or too long of pulls. With this team’s training, I’d guess it’s a bit of all three.

This reviewer likes espresso, a LOT, and does not like espresso that needs honey and vanilla or white chocolate to make it palatable

Best of luck, though. It’s off to a good start after pandemic, and it has...

Sunday morning and I arrived just before 7am. The barista was setting out the chairs and asked that I hang out until official opening time. Okay, so I wandered a bit and then returned. Coffee this morning was an attempt at a cortado but was more like a double espresso. Which was okay because it was excellent coffee but not quite what I wanted. Very comfy working space and on this Sunday morning, there was time to crank out a few Yelp reviews while waiting for Plattsburgh to wake up.

Stopped here for coffee before we headed back to Canada and are so happy we did! The lattes were delicious as well as the breakfast sandwiches. Service was phenomenal, location was clean. They have a dog of fame wall- if you have your pet with you they’ll take a picture and add it to the wall which was awesome. Great seating areas, clean bathroom and near the back they had board games!
